Gabigol Benched: Cruzeiro Coach Leonardo Jardim Explains Star Striker’s Absence in São Paulo Draw

A surprising sight greeted fans during Sunday’s 1-1 draw between Cruzeiro and São Paulo in the Brazilian Championship: Gabigol,Cruzeiro’s star striker, remained on the bench for the entire match. Coach Leonardo Jardim addressed the controversial decision, citing tactical reasons for keeping the prolific goalscorer out of the action at Morumbis Stadium.

Jardim explained that the game’s specific dynamics didn’t suit Gabigol’s playing style. Gabriel too, in a game of these characteristics, can not help us much. This happened against Inter. A game more of transition, speed, attack the first ball. He is not this model, Jardim stated, suggesting Gabigol thrives in a different tactical setup.

This explanation echoes similar situations seen in American sports. Think of a power-hitting designated hitter in baseball, like a Nelson Cruz type, being less effective in a National League game requiring him to play the field. Or a bruising running back in football, like a Derrick Henry, being less utilized in a game plan emphasizing quick passes and agility.

jardim elaborated, He is more comfortable in a different model. In a model with two attackers, he is a very quality striker. It was not that strategy today, the strategy was different. So it was why he was out. This implies a preference for a strike partnership or a system that allows Gabigol to operate closer to the goal, rather than a counter-attacking approach.

Despite the benching,Jardim emphasized his admiration for the player. I’m a big fan of Gabriel, I’m a fan becuase he’s a born finisher, he’s a player I like, the coach affirmed. This public support aims to quell any potential discord within the team and maintain Gabigol’s morale.

A Rare Occurrence

This marks the first time Gabigol has been named to the squad since joining Cruzeiro and not featured in the match. The last instance of him being an unused substitute dates back to October 30, 2024, while still with Flamengo, against Internacional. This unprecedented situation raises questions about Gabigol’s future role within the team and jardim’s long-term plans.

Prior to this match, Gabigol had featured in 11 games this season, leading the team with seven goals. For the São Paulo game, Jardim opted for Kaio Jorge as the starting forward, later bringing on marquinhos, Dudu, and Lautaro Díaz as substitutes, further highlighting the tactical shift away from gabigol’s strengths.

this decision could be compared to a coach in the NBA choosing to sit a star player known for isolation plays in favor of a more ball-movement-oriented lineup, even if the star is a proven scorer. The coach prioritizes team dynamics and a specific game plan over individual talent.

Cruzeiro’s Performance and Future Outlook

The draw at Morumbis ended Cruzeiro’s three-game losing streak across all competitions. The team currently sits in 12th place with four points from three games. While a point on the road is valuable, the lingering question remains: how will Cruzeiro integrate Gabigol back into the starting lineup and maximize his goal-scoring potential?

Cruzeiro’s next match is this thursday against Bahia at Mineirão.Fans will be watching closely to see if gabigol returns to the field and how Jardim adjusts his tactics to accommodate the star striker’s abilities.
