Oberursel Sports Club Faces Crisis: New Hall Dreams Dwindle as Gym Closures mount

The Turn- und Sportgemeinde Oberursel (TSGO), Oberursel’s largest sports club, is grappling with a perfect storm of challenges: a stalled promise of land for a new facility and crippling closures of school gymnasiums. The situation threatens the club’s growth and the athletic opportunities for it’s hundreds of members.

The TSGO’s woes stem from a 2013 agreement with the city, intended to provide the club with land to build its own hall. This agreement was made after the city repurposed the Altkönig sports field,previously owned by TSGO,for residential development to fund a new swimming pool. The promise was simple: sell the land, build villas, and in return, TSGO gets a new plot for a much-needed sports hall. But years later, the club is still waiting.

Jutta Stahl, TSGO’s managing director, voiced her frustration to the social, education, and cultural committee. We have wanted to build the hall since 2017.We had the means. Stahl lamented the rising construction costs, stating, our new building is getting smaller every year. The planned multifunctional hall,designed to accommodate activities ranging from judo to badminton and even handball,was initially budgeted at around two million euros in 2018. Now, that figure seems increasingly unrealistic.

the lack of progress is compounded by the ongoing renovation of the Erich Kästner school (EKS) sports halls, now delayed until the frist quarter of 2026, according to district authorities. This closure, coupled with Bad Homburg’s decision to reclaim all indoor times previously allocated to TSGO, has left the club scrambling for training space.

This situation is especially dire for the handball department, which boasts 530 members and 27 teams. We are the most successful handball club in the circle. But we have to push everywhere, half trained in too small halls, Stahl explained. The club managed to secure temporary space in Königstein, but Stahl fears the situation will worsen in the fall. Bad Homburg left us only two training sessions by autumn. The two high-level teams are fortunate to train with adhesion in the Hochtaunushalle, a privilege not available in many facilities.

The Search for Solutions: A Race Against Time

The absence of a three-field hall in Oberursel, exacerbated by water damage limiting the use of the high school hall, further complicates matters. Stahl emphasizes that the new hall is not a substitute for the closed school gymnasiums. These are two different topics, which make the whole thing twice as bad.

City officials acknowledge the urgency of the situation. First City Councilor Jens Uhlig (CDU) stated that the city is aware of its duty, but suitable areas are scarce. Martin Krebs from the town hall added that they are working “intensively” to find a solution.We are painfully aware of the dilemma of the TSGO – we as a sports office manage a deficiency. Krebs noted the challenges in finding suitable locations,citing noise restrictions in residential areas as a major obstacle.

Currently, negotiations are underway for two “promising” plots of land with private owners. However, officials are hesitant to raise false hopes. The city has promised to discuss the matter with the head of the spa, emphasizing the need for solidarity within the Hochtaunus region. TSGO hopes to maintain its training arrangements in Bad Homburg until the EKS halls reopen.

TSGO is actively seeking support in identifying potential locations, requiring a centrally located, well-connected area of approximately 5000 square meters. The club has already submitted a list of 20 options to the town hall. We have been hearing for eight years that talks are going, we should wait and see again and again. It is frustrating, Stahl said.

The club favors a location behind the EKS,while the former Hans Thoma School property is deemed unsuitable due to the district’s refusal to relinquish it. A portion of the outdoor pool area is also under consideration, despite concerns about cold air exposure.
