you’ve been a staunch advocate for the development of basketball infrastructure in Manjung.Could you elaborate on the progress made and the impact it has had on the youth?
Absolutely. Under my guidance, we’ve managed to construct rain-covered basketball courts across all Chinese villages in manjung. These facilities have provided a dedicated space for our young athletes to hone their skills and stay active. The positive impact has been remarkable. We’ve seen an increase in interest in the sport,with more kids joining local teams and participating in tournaments. Moreover, we’ve witnessed a decline in negative behaviors among youth, as they now have a healthy outlet for their energies.
One of your notable achievements is securing RM800,000 from the Minister of Housing and Local Government, Ng Kormin, for the completion of a rain-covered basketball court on Pangkor Island. Could you tell us more about this and the support you’ve received from government bodies and local businesses?
I’m grateful for the support we’ve received from various stakeholders. As a legislator, I’ve worked closely with government bodies to secure funds for sports infrastructure development. The RM800,000 fund for Pangkor Island is a testament to this collaboration. I’m also indebted to local businesses like Obama Bistro & Cafe, Jin En Group, Mao Ji Bird’s Nest, and Immanuel Construction, which have consistently backed our initiatives through donations and sponsorships. Their support has been instrumental in making our basketball dreams a reality.
The ‘Datuk Niko Han Cup’ has drawn significant attention with nine men’s teams and three women’s teams participating. How do you see this tournament contributing to the growth and recognition of Manjung’s basketball talent?
This tournament is a great possibility for our local talent to showcase their skills and gain recognition. It’s a platform for our young players to measure themselves against other teams, learn from their opponents, and grow as individuals and as a team. Moreover, I believe it will serve as a stepping stone for some of our top talents to represent Manjung and Perak in national competitions. In fact, several of our players have already been selected for the Perak state team, and one has been chosen for the national youth team under the age of 16.

One of the main challenges has been ensuring sustained funding and resources for our sports programs. To overcome this, we’ve focused on building strong relationships with local businesses, government bodies, and other stakeholders. We’ve also been innovative in seeking alternative sources of funding, such as sponsorships and donations. Additionally, we’ve rallied the community behind our cause, with parents, teachers, and residents all playing a role in supporting our young athletes.
Looking ahead, what are your plans for further developing basketball in Manjung and empowering the youth?
