Héctor Delgado Transforms Lives with Basketball at Jireh Kingdom Christian Academy

From Reggaeton to Redemption: How ‘El Father’ is Now Coaching Champions On and Off the Court

Gurabo, Puerto Rico – Seventeen years after Héctor Delgado, formerly known as reggaeton superstar “El Father,” traded the stage for the pulpit, his impact is being felt in unexpected arenas – including the basketball court. Delgado, now a pastor,is merging faith and hoops at Jireh Kingdom Christian Academy, proving that redemption can come in many forms.

Delgado’s transformation is well-known. Gone are the days when he dominated the urban music scene with hits like El Teléfono and Noche de Travesura. Today,he leads the Maranatha Church in Rio Grande, directs a rehabilitation center in Juncos, and, perhaps most surprisingly, manages the Jireh Kingdom Christian Academy in Gurabo,a school he acquired in march of last year.

But this isn’t just a vanity project. Delgado is building a basketball powerhouse, and he’s doing it with a higher purpose. He sees the sport as a vehicle for guiding young men toward faith and education.

“That was an possibility that arose to me, and as I tell peopel, every opportunity that God puts in my hands to bring people closer to Jesus, I will do it. Sometimes we criticize young people because some do not go for a good path, but it is not to criticize, it is to look for tools for them to understand that, more than fame and money, the stability of man is in Jesus,” Delgado said in an interview.

Building a Buzzer Beater Contender

Under Delgado’s leadership and the guidance of coach Edgar acevedo, Jireh has become a force to be reckoned with in puerto Rican high school basketball. The team is currently competing in the Top Ranked Buzzer Beater tournament, a high-profile competition showcasing the island’s top talent. The integration of players like Edgar Acevedo, Jatzel García, Diego Sánchez, Ismael Manasrah, and Jendrick Maldonado, all on scholarships, has elevated the program to championship contender status.

Delgado emphasizes that success on the court is secondary to personal growth and academic achievement. He proudly notes that seven out of ten of his players have earned college scholarships.

“These players have grown spiritually. You hear them in the interviews and they are always giving the glory to the Lord and that is our first championship. Our second championship is to study at a university. Of 10 players, seven were scholarship by a university. With that, we already won. The third championship that we have left is the Buzzer Beater, but I told them that they are already champions for me,” Delgado stated.

One particularly inspiring story is that of Jendrick Maldonado, a former school dropout who will now attend the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) of Carolina. Maldonado’s transformation exemplifies Delgado’s commitment to providing opportunities for young people to turn their lives around.

“Those boys have become my children,” Delgado said. “For me it is a pleasure and a pride to work with them. They are very dedicated, sacrificed and very humble. We are working to get the other three scholarships that we have left, but from the beginning this was what we were looking for: that players can do, through the studies, a career.”

A lifelong Love of the Game

Despite his demanding schedule, Delgado remains a fixture at Jireh’s games. His passion for basketball runs deep, dating back to his own playing days at Ciem (Private School of Carolina).

“I don’t no how I do it, but God gives me strength. I like to serve. I am happy with this new stage because I was a athlete. I played in Ciem (Private School of Carolina). The reality is that I like basketball. I am a Fiebrú and I can answer you what you ask me of basketball, from Georgie Torres to wes Correa. Imagine,I am combining something that I like with God. This has been phenomenal,” he shared.

Delgado’s commitment extends beyond the school team. He has also invested in the Jireh Basketball Academy club, which competes in the Youth League of the Basketball Federation of Puerto Rico (FBPUR), further solidifying his dedication to developing young talent.

Jireh’s quest for their first Buzzer Beater title continues as they face Adianez de Guaynabo. But regardless of the outcome, Héctor Delgado has already achieved something far more significant: transforming lives through faith, education, and the power of basketball.
