Exclusive Interview: Tony Gonzalez Discusses Deebo Samuel’s Move & the Future of Washington Commanders
Host (Host): Today, we have a special guest joining us. Tony Gonzalez needs no introduction, a future Hall of Famer, and one of the most dominant tight ends in NFL history.Tony, thank you for joining us today.
Tony Gonzalez (TG): Thanks for having me.
Host: Let’s dive right in. Deebo Samuel has swapped the red and gold of the 49ers for the red, white, and gold of the Washington Commanders. What’s your take on this move?
TG: Well, from a Commanders’ outlook, it’s a fantastic move. They’ve been needing a playmaker like Deebo for years. He’s a game-changer, a dynamic threat as both a receiver and a runner. Last season alone, he had 3,000 combined yards from scrimmage. That’s ridiculous!
Host: Absolutely. But Tony, some people argue that Samuel’s production is heavily dependent on Trey Lance’s advancement. How do you think he’ll fare with a rookie QB like jayden Daniels?
TG: I think it’s an chance for both of them to grow together. Jayden has a tremendous arm, and we’ve seen him make plays in college.Deebo’s a mismatch nightmare, and as a rookie QB, you want mismatches to throw to. It’s not like Deebo is a one-system wonder. He’s shown he can adapt. Remember 2020? He had buzzards like Nick Mullens and C.J. Beathard under center, and he still managed 1,722 yards from scrimmage.
Host: That’s a fair point. Let’s discuss Jayden Daniels. He’s the new hotshot in town. Do you think he’s ready to step into a starting role in the NFL?
TG: I’m not here to question the Commanders’ talent evaluation, but I do have some reservations. Daniels is confident, there’s no doubt whatsoever about it. Look at his college numbers – 4,820 passing yards, 40 TDs, 17 ints in three seasons. But the jump from college to the NFL is significant, and he hasn’t had many reps in a pro-style offense. I’m excited to see him grow, though. He’s got the skill set.
Host: Speaking of growth, Terry McLaurin is already an established threat. How do you think Samuel’s arrival will affect McLaurin?
TG: First, let’s not diminish McLaurin’s capabilities. He’s been a consistent force since his rookie year. Deebo coming in doesn’t take away from Terry’s workload – it might even help it. Two elite receivers stretching the field means more space for both of them. Remember, defenses can only double-team so much. It’s a win-win for Washington’s offense.
Host: Tony, let’s switch gears a bit. Deebo was known for his ‘wideback’ role in San Fran – do you see him filling a similar role in Washington?
TG: I do. Ron Rivera’s a creative coach, and I think he’ll find ways to utilize Deebo’s unique skill set.Maybe not as an every-down back, but certainly in some creative packages. They could line him up in the backfield, flex him out wide,or even in the slot. The Commanders have weapons now, and that’s scary.
Host: Final thoughts, Tony? Do you think the Commanders are now genuine NFC contenders?
TG: With this acquisition, they’ve certainly put themselves in that conversation. They’ve upgraded their offense considerably and have a playoff-caliber defense. Kirk Cousins proved in Minnesota that you can win with weapons, not just a great QB. Daniels might not be an elite-level QB yet, but with deebo, McLaurin, and the rest of that offense, he doesn’t have to be.
Host: Thanks for your insightful analysis, Tony. Do you agree with Tony’s perspective on the Commanders’ new weapons and their chances in the NFC? Share your thoughts in the comments!
