BAYAGUANA, Dominican Republic – The future of badminton in the Dominican Republic looks bright as the first National Bayaguana Tournament 2025 officially commenced this Saturday, igniting passion among over 200 young athletes.The Isaac Ogando Sports Complex is hosting the event, which began Friday and features 13 provincial associations vying for supremacy in the U-11, U-13, and U-15 categories.

Nelson Javier Ozuna,president of the Dominican Badminton Federation (Fedobad),emphasized the tournament’s core objective: fostering enjoyment and skill development among the young participants. The primary objective of the contest is that the children and adolescents participating…the competences are fun and fully enjoyed, which it considered will affect the progress of the Bádminton in the country, Ozuna stated during the opening ceremony. This sentiment echoes the broader philosophy of youth sports development, prioritizing positive experiences to cultivate long-term engagement.

The opening ceremony saw a distinguished lineup of attendees, including Monte Plata Governor Rafaela Javier Gomera, technical director José Efraín Fabián, and Fedobad development head Professor Rafael Lora, alongside leaders and athletes from the participating associations. The support of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation (Miderec) and the National Institute of Physical Education (INEFI) was also acknowledged as crucial to the event’s success.

This tournament mirrors similar youth sports initiatives across the United States, where organizations like Little League Baseball and Pop Warner Football emphasize skill-building and character development alongside competition. Governor Javier Gomera lauded Fedobad’s initiative,emphasizing the importance of motivating children to participate in sports. They are forming excellent citizens, she stated,underscoring the positive impact of sports on character development and community building.

Technical director josé Efraín Fabián assured that all logistical aspects, including lodging, transportation, security, and meals, have been meticulously addressed to ensure a smooth and triumphant tournament. Rafael Lora, director of the Development Program, revealed that Fedobad has identified promising new talents through this initiative. The competitions are scheduled daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM at the Isaac Ogando Sports Complex. Participating associations include the National District,Monte Plata,hato Mayor,Baní,Barahona,San Cristóbal,San Pedro de Macorís,higüey,El Seibo,San Juan de la Maguana,Neyba,and Moca.
