Exclusive Interview: basketball Enthusiast Younes Elhima on Division Excellence de Basketball – Insights & Controversies!
Welcome, Younes! Tell us about yourself and your involvement in basketball
Younes Elhima: Hi, delighted to be here! I’m Younes Elhima, a lifelong basketball fan with a career spanning over two decades, primarily as a sports journalist and analyst. I’ve covered various tournaments, including the NBA, EuroLeague, and domestically, the Division Excellence de Basketball. I’ve also worked as a color commentator, adding my unique insights to game broadcasts. Off the court, I’ve played the sport competitively, providing me with firsthand knowledge of the game’s intricacies.
Division Excellence de Basketball returned with a bang. Share your thoughts on the thrilling clashes so far
Younes: Indeed, the return was electrifying! The clash between AS Salé and AS FAR at the FAR sports centre in Salé was a testament to the intense rivalry in Moroccan basketball.AS Salé’s victory was well-deserved, but FAR made them fight for every point. The tight contest was a great start to the post-Afrobasket phase.
AS Salé is leading the pack with a 26-point lead. Do you see them maintaining this momentum?
Younes: Their performance has been impressive, there’s no doubt whatsoever. But basketball is a game of streaks, and their rivals are catching up quickly. IR Tangier and Fath Union Sports are breathing down their necks. IR Tangier’s win over Chabab Ouatia was particularly convincing. However, AS Salé has been here before. They’ve won the title twice in the past three seasons.Consistency is key, and if they maintain their form, they could extend their lead.
Me: While AS Salé’s record is impressive, let’s not forget about Wydad de Casablanca’s recent surge. They’ve climbed to third place with a 24-point tally, thanks to wins like their 72-61 victory over Majd Tanger. Could they challenge AS Salé?
Younes: Absolutely, WAC’s rise is commendable. They’re playing some of their best basketball under coach Said Boujraf. They’ve got a young, talented roster that’s gaining experiance each game. They’re definitely contenders, but consistency has been their kryptonite. if they can play like they did against Majd Tanger more often, they could certainly challenge AS Salé.
Controversies – let’s dive into it. The refereeing has been a hot topic this season. Fair criticism or overblown?
Younes: Refereeing has been a contentious issue, that’s undeniable. Some calls have been questionable, which can often shift the outcome of close games. However, I believe it’s unfair to place all the blame on the referees. Some of the criticism is exaggerated, and we must remember that they’re humans, susceptible to mistakes.
Me: But isn’t the lack of consistency in officiating a legitimate concern? We’ve seen some serious discrepancies in how fouls are called, especially regarding contact under the basket.
Younes: You’re right. Consistency is indeed a problem. But we need to look at the bigger picture. The Division Excellence de Basketball faces numerous challenges, including limited resources and time for referee training. We need more investment in referee development and technology, like instant replay, to help make better, more consistent calls.
Do you think there’s a place for instant replay in Moroccan basketball?
Younes: Absolutely.Instant replay has been around in major basketball leagues for years and has significantly improved officiating. It’s time we consider implementing it here. it won’t solve all our problems, but it could help reduce some of the controversial moments that plague our games.
The game’s evolved – increased athleticism, three-pointers, pace of play. How do you see Moroccan basketball adapting?
younes: evolution is inevitable, and Moroccan basketball is no exception. We’re seeing a shift towards a more up-tempo, outside-shooting oriented style. Teams like FUS and IR Tangier exemplify this. However, I hope we don’t lose sight of customary basketball principles – fundamentals, team play, and defense.
Me: But isn’t that a natural evolution? As players get better, they shoot more, play faster. Shouldn’t we be encouraging this evolution?
Younes: To an extent, yes. But we must ensure balance. We don’t want to become a league where jump shots are the only thing that matters. Moreover, our players should be well-rounded. They should be able to play inside and out,not just rely on outside shooting.
Lastly, Younes, what can fans expect from the rest of the season?
Younes: Expect the unexpected! We’ve seen comebacks, upsets, and thrilling finishes. I believe the best is yet to come. The competition is fierce, and every team believes they can make it to the playoffs. Fans should gear up for an exciting ride!
