Cuban Team Faces Visa Roadblocks in Puerto Rico
The Cuban Basketball Federation issued a statement detailing the frustrating visa issues that have prevented thier team from competing in the FIBA Americas tournament in Puerto Rico. The team, slated to face the home side on February 23rd, was thwarted by a series of visa denials.
Visa Denials Hamstring Cuban Team
A significant number of visa applications were submitted by the Cuban delegation in Havana, but nine requests were denied. This included key players like Aldo Miguel Castel Cabrera, Ibrahim Hahavarría Sánchez, and Michel Espinosa Rodríguez. The team’s travel plans were further complex by the need for passports to travel to the Bahamas, where they lost a crucial game on Thursday, 74-97.
Further Visa setbacks
- Visa applications for Marco Chacón Tirado (Argentina),Pedro Bombino Parada (Argentina),Yoanki José Mencía Hernández (Spain),and Howard Powell sant-Roos Olano (Spain) were also denied.
- Marlon Díaz Miranda’s visa application from Uruguay expired.
- Only Jasiel rivero Fernández (Israel), Karel Guzmán Abreu (Romania), and Sigfredo Casero Ortiz (Spain) secured visas.
A Missed Opportunity
The Cuban Federation expressed disappointment at the missed opportunity to compete in Puerto Rico, a nation with a strong basketball tradition. The federation highlighted the positive relationship with the Puerto Rican federation, emphasizing the mutual respect and shared passion for the sport.
A Violation of the Olympic Ideal
The federation strongly criticized the visa denials, calling them a violation of the Olympic spirit. The lack of visas deprived the Cuban team of the chance to play in Puerto Rico, a significant setback for the team and the sport.

FIBA and FIBA Americas Efforts
