Exclusive Interview: A Young Lion in the Vendée Globe – Violette Dorange’s Triumphant Return
Moderator: Welcome to the show, Violette! It’s incredible to have you here. Finishing the Vendée Globe, a solo, non-stop, adn unsupported round-the-world yacht race, in 25th place at the young age of 23 is a phenomenal accomplishment. This race is notoriously brutal, demanding incredible physical and mental fortitude. Let’s start at the beginning. What was your motivation for entering a race like this?
Violette Dorange: I’ve always been passionate about sailing. The Vendée Globe has been a personal dream since I was a child – watching races and following the legendary sailors, who inspired me to aim for this challenge. At the start of the race, I was driven by a mix of my passion and an urge to test my limits and achieve one of my biggest aspirations.
moderator: The vendée Globe is often described as more of a mental endurance test than a solely physical one. How did you approach the mental aspect of such a demanding race?
Violette Dorange: The mental preparation was just as crucial as – if not more crucial than – the physical training. I spent months strategizing, visualizing each stage, and developing mental toughness routines. Isolation is key to enduring the solo nature of the race. It was crucial to train my mind to cope with loneliness, the certain challenges, and moments of doubt.
Moderator: Your social media presence and your infectious personality have captured the attention of millions. did you anticipate the level of media interest and popularity you’ve experienced as the race?
violette Dorange: Honesty, no. I anticipated the media attention in a limited way. Sailing is a vrey individual sport, and while there is a team aspect to some races,it’s largely a mental and physical exercise. My social media, that was a way to communicate with friends and family and document my journey. But to see that engagement? That was unusual and inspiring.
Moderator: You finished the race in 25th place. How dose that ranking fit into your own expectations and the wider context of the vendée Globe?
violette Dorange: 25th place is a testament to the commitment and perseverance that I brought to this race. It’s not a measure of success or failure but more about the personal journey. I was competing against some highly experienced sailors with extensive track records, and for me, this experience is invaluable. It is indeed a learning curve in all aspects and I’m thankful for the support and the opportunity to have come so close to achieving my goal.
Moderator: Can you draw comparisons between overcoming challenges in sailing and in other sports like endurance races or individual sports?
Violette Dorange: Absolutely. Endurance is at the heart of many sports. The mental resilience required in the Vendée Globe is analogous to the mental fortitude needed for ultra-marathons, or enduring physical trials in individual sports. It’s about pushing beyond perceived limits and learning to cope with setbacks. the mental toughness that carries you through setbacks is also crucial to long-term sporting success.
Moderator: Your brother pointed out that even celebrities follow your Instagram! Given the growing role of social media in sports, how do you approach this newfound fame?
Violette Dorange: It’s definitely a new dimension in my experience. I remain grounded. This newfound attention is a very interesting aspect of doing sports today, and I strive to use it responsibly. I find this part of my journey motivating, and I truly hope that this experience inspires other people to embrace their dreams and test their limits.
Moderator: What lessons have you learned from this race that you’ll apply in future endeavors, in sailing or other facets of your life.
Violette Dorange: The Vendée Globe has been a powerful personal lesson. I’ve learned the importance of adaptability, strategic planning, and resilience in the face of adversity. My journey has been a voyage of self-discovery, teaching me new ways to approach challenges and develop my own unique approaches to overcome obstacles. Most of all, I have learned the importance of persistence, resilience, and keeping your eye on the goal.
Moderator: looking ahead, what might your next athletic goals or projects be?
Violette Dorange: I’d love to explore new sailing challenges and continue pushing my boundaries. Maybe, in the future, another Vendée Globe, or perhaps a new race. I am open to a multitude of new experiences and opportunities that will come my way.
