The Senate, in a 210-81 vote, approved a bill proposed by Senator Michel Savin. The bill explicitly prohibits “any sign or outfit ostensibly manifesting political or religious affiliation” during competitions organized by sports federations. The government, through Minister François-Noël Buffet, argued that the ban was a necesary step in combating separatism. “Let the government argue with force, bring a welcome stone in the building that together we have to build for years against all forms of separatism,” Buffet stated. Though, the opposition, led by left-leaning senators, vehemently opposed the measure, citing concerns about religious discrimination and an attack on the principle of secularism.

Critics, including Senator Patrick Kanner, argued that the bill unfairly targets muslim athletes. “Using this founding principle to serve your antimusulman story, you only feed confusion, approximations and stereotypes,” Kanner stated. Environmentalist Mathilde Ollivier accused the right of targeting women of Muslim faith, aiming to exclude them from sports.
