This inspired Sergi and his brother too follow in their footsteps.
Their early training took place in a modest space at the Salt Pavilion, equipped with only four bars.This humble beginning fueled their determination.Later, they found a more professional environment at the GEiEG, where the facilities and resources fostered their growth as athletes. Sergi emphasizes the superior training conditions at GEiEG, highlighting it as the best facility in Girona for aspiring weightlifters.

Sergi’s dedication paid off, culminating in ten state championships in his weight class. This impressive record propelled him to three World Championships, including a remarkable seventh-place finish. Though, success comes with sacrifices. “If you want to reach the highest level, you have to let go of many things, especially when you’re young,” Sergi reflects.

The year 2004 brought a profound personal challenge. While competing at a World Championship in Kraków, Sergi mourned the loss of his father. Ironically, that same year, his brother competed in the Olympic games in Athens.This period underscored the profound commitment and resilience required to excel in the sport.

The selection of a Canary Islander weightlifter for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, while seemingly inconsequential, stung. sergi and his brother were denied their chance to compete on the world stage. “The Olympics are the cherry on top,” he acknowledged, “but many doors close, and others open.” This experience, though painful, didn’t extinguish his passion.

He channeled his energy into a new career path, becoming a fitness instructor at GEiEG, the club that had nurtured his early career. “I’ll be eternally grateful to GEiEG,” he stated, “for shaping me as an athlete, a person, and a worker.” His story is a powerful reminder that setbacks can pave the way for new opportunities.
