Interviewer (Int): Nicolas, thanks for joining us today. Your performance in Samsun was nothing short of breathtaking. What do you attribute your success to?
Nicolas Girard (NG): Thank you for having me. I beleive my success comes from a combination of factors – dedication, consistent training, and learning from my previous experiences. Each competition is a step upward, and I’ve been working tirelessly to improve my skills and composure under pressure.
Int: Speaking of pressure, you outscored your opponent 150-143 in the final. Can you walk us through that final bout?
NG: It was indeed a tense moment. I stayed focused on my performance, taking it shot by shot. Jozef is a strong competitor, but I’ve learned from past losses that I can’t control my opponentS score; I can only focus on my own. That day, everything just clicked.
Int: You’ve competed in five European Championships now, with this being your first gold. How does this triumph rank among your previous accomplishments?
NG: Each medal has it’s own story and significance, but this one is definately a highlight. After two bronze medals, winning gold was incredibly satisfying. It’s a testament to my growth as an archer and a confidence boost heading into Paris 2024.
Int: Paris 2024 – that’s the elephant in the room. How are you and the team preparing for this monumental event?
NG: We’re working hard, and we’re smart about our training. We know the pressure will be immense, but we’re using that to fuel our planning. We’re analyzing our performances, learning from both our wins and losses, and constantly adapting our tactics. We want to be at our best when we step onto that Olympic stage.
Int: Let’s talk tactics. Archery might seem like an individual sport, but there’s a team aspect. How does the French team collaborate and strategize together?
NG: Absolutely, teamwork is crucial. We discuss our performances openly, learn from each other, and adapt our strategies based on our opponents. At the barebow level, David Jackson did exceptionally well, winning both individual bronze and contributing to our silver medal in the team event.
Int: You mention David. There’s been some discussion about the ’duel’ for the bronze medal between him and Jérôme Souchaud. tensions must have been high.
NG: (Laughs) Yes,it was a difficult situation. We’re teammates, friends, but in that moment, we were competitors. I believe both handled it professionally. it’s about growing as individuals to strengthen the team as a whole.
Int: Switching gears, the Classic Arc category saw a double victory for France. How does this bode for the team’s chances in Paris 2024?
NG: Victoria and Lisa’s performances were truly inspiring. It shows the depth of talent within our team. If we can continue to push each other like this, we’ll be in a strong position heading into the Olympics.
Int: Lastly, Nicolas, what advice would you give to young, aspiring archers looking up to you?
NG: Never give up.There will be ups and downs, but each experience, good or bad, teaches us something new. Stay dedicated, keep learning, and most importantly, enjoy the journey.
Int: Thank you, Nicolas, for sharing your insights and experiences with us today! It’s clear that team France is setting their sights high for Paris 2024.
