On January 29th, while assisting a fellow competitor’s disabled vehicle on the road to Reims, Baumel was struck by another vehicle. The Grueling Recovery
The road to recovery was arduous. Baumel underwent an eight-hour operation, losing his right leg to amputation. Further complications arose as he experienced two cardiac arrests during the procedure. Yet, he persevered, driven by a profound desire to return to his family and to the life he loved.
The extent of the injuries was severe.”I had all the bones of both broken legs: femur, tibia, on each side,” he recounted. “It was necessary to amputate my right leg and rehabilitate my left. My left leg will have a titanium rod, a ‘nailing’ system, to hold the fractured bones together.” The intricate nature of the procedure underscores the remarkable skill of the medical professionals involved.

Despite the trauma and the daunting prospect of a life altered forever, Baumel’s focus remained unwavering. Even while in a coma, he knew he had more to accomplish.
