Moderator (M): Welcome, everyone, to this exclusive interview wiht former NFL quarterback and Super Bowl champion, Alex Smith.Alex, thank you for joining us today.
Alex Smith (AS): Thanks for having me.
M: Let’s dive right in. The Kansas City Chiefs are currently at the NFL Combine, scouting prospects to bolster their roster. As someone who’s been on both sides of the combine, what’s your take on its importance for teams like the Chiefs?
AS: The combine is crucial, especially for a team like the chiefs who are in a pivotal phase of strategic planning. It’s not just about physical measurements, but also getting a sense of a player’s intangibles – their drive, work ethic, and football IQ. For the Chiefs, it’s about finding players who align with their system and can definitely help maintain their competitive edge.
M: The article mentions the Chiefs’ limited cap adaptability. How do you think they should approach free agency and the draft to maximize value?
AS: well, the Chiefs need to be strategic. They can’t afford to overspend on free agents when they could be targeting a younger, cheaper option in the draft. they’ve got to use the draft to find long-term solutions. Plus, with Andy Reid calling the shots, they understand the value of scheme fit – they won’t just go for big names, they’ll target players who can excel in their system.
M: Speaking of the draft, last year, we saw Patrick Mahomes take a leap towards becoming an elite quarterback. What’s your expectation for him in 2025, and who do you think the Chiefs should target to help him?
AS: I expect big things from Mahomes, as always. The kid’s a unicorn at the position. To help him, the Chiefs should focus on getting him more weapons.A talented receiver or tight end could take them to the next level. And let’s not forget, they need to protect him. A solid offensive lineman could be a game-changer.
M: Engaging. Now, let’s talk about the future. The Chiefs want to build a strong foundation for long-term success. What steps can they take to ensure they remain a powerhouse in the league?
AS: They need to keep investing in their coaching staff. Andy Reid’s done an astonishing job there, but it’s not just about the head coach. quality assistants can make a huge difference. They also need to stick with their system and philosophy. Consistency breeds success in the NFL.
M: Agreed. Now, Alex, let’s stir the pot a bit. The Chiefs have been guilty of draft misses in the past. What’s your take on critics who argue they should be further along than they are, given their draft history?
AS: I think it’s a fair criticism, but it’s also critically important to look at their successes. Guys like Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, and Chris Jones were home runs. You can’t win them all in the draft, even with the best scouting department. Plus, they’ve made significant trades that have paid off – think Mahomes, and even the Dee Ford trade that landed them a compensatory pick that became Juan Thornhill. It’s about balance and noted adaptability.
M: Strong point. alright, final question. the 2025 season is around the corner. What’s your prediction for the Chiefs, and who do you think their biggest obstacle will be?
AS: I think the Chiefs have what it takes to go deep into the playoffs. But their biggest obstacle? They’re in a tough division with the Raiders and the Broncos both on the rise.beyond that, maintaining health, as always, will be key. If they can stay injury-free and play to their potential, there’s no reason they can’t compete for a Super Bowl.
M: Thanks, Alex. It’s always a pleasure. Do you have any final thoughts for our readers?
AS: I’d just say, keep an eye on the Chiefs. They’re not just built for now, they’re built for the future. With the right moves, they could be a dominant force in the NFL for years to come.
