Guillaume Guidec: Thank you for having me.
Moderator: Guillaume, you’re competing in the Brittany Championship this weekend. This championship represents a important opportunity for regional glory. Can you elaborate on the importance of this event for archers in Brittany?
Guillaume Guidec: The Brittany Championship is a crucial event for us. It tests the skill levels of serious athletes, determines regional supremacy, and, ultimately, paves the way for bigger competitions.Achieving a podium position validates years of hard work and dedication.Plus, competing on home turf gives us a fantastic boost of confidence, as the local support is really strong.
Moderator: You’ve mentioned the home advantage, and that’s a very compelling point. How do you feel the home habitat can influence the outcomes for you and other competitors?
guillaume Guidec: The atmosphere is electric. Knowing the support system is amazing; it fosters a sense of belonging and elevates the focus for the competitors. This heightened attention can either elevate performance or be a hindrance depending on an athlete’s mental fortitude and consistency.
Moderator: You’ve recently experienced a setback at the morbihan championship. How has this experience shaped your approach to the upcoming Brittany Championship?
Guillaume Guidec: The Morbihan setback was certainly a tough pill to swallow. It highlighted areas where I needed to refine my technique, specifically in my mental game, and consistency through long stretches in both training and competition. That experience has spurred me to focus on meticulous preparation. I’m drilling specific techniques and using mindfulness practices to stay centered—something I always tell every beginning archer.
Moderator: The Brittany Championship incorporates classic, compound, and bare bows. What are your insights regarding the differences in technique and strategy for these distinct bow types?
Guillaume Guidec: Each bow type demands a unique approach. Classic bows emphasize form and feel while compound bows often require more precise timing and strength. Barebows demand remarkable precision as you have to rely considerably on physical strength. My focus currently is bare bow mixed—it tests strength as well as mental resilience.
Moderator: The championship format utilizes a chessboard-style approach for determining the top 16 per category. Have you encountered this format before, and if so, what’s your strategy for navigating it? Has it affected your training in any way?
Guillaume Guidec: Yes, I’ve seen similar formats before. The chessboard style forces you to play strategically. You have to analyze the opponent and their style, which requires an understanding of your own potential and limitations. I’m adjusting my training to prepare for the strategic aspect of the competition, as well as focusing on minimizing the potential psychological impact of these strategic matches.
Moderator: Let’s talk about the sportsmanship expected. What’s your take on the etiquette of the sport? Are there any lessons from other sports that can aid our understanding of how to best approach sportsmanship in archery?
Guillaume Guidec: Sportsmanship encompasses respect for your opponent, the rules, the judges, and your fellow competitors,as well as the audience. Learning to manage emotions and failures gracefully is key; to bounce back after adverse reactions while keeping a sense of humility. Learning from sports like basketball, when they foster collaboration, and cooperation, gives you an understanding of humility.
