Tragedy Strikes Young Rugby Player Axel
Fourteen-year-old Axel, a promising rugby player for Racing Club Labarthais in Haute-Garonne, France, tragically lost his life in a car accident on February 14. The accident occurred on a small road between Labarthe and Auterive as darkness fell.
A vehicle, driven by a 48-year-old man, struck Axel while he was riding his bicycle. Reports indicate the driver was intoxicated. Emergency responders arrived swiftly, but unfortunately, Axel succumbed to his injuries.
Outpouring of Grief and Support
The news of Axel’s passing sent shockwaves through the rugby community. racing Club Labarthais,his club,expressed profound sorrow on social media,describing him as an “exemplary boy,full of life,full of joy.” Their message echoed the collective grief, stating, “One more star shines in the sky. The whole club associates with the pain of the family. Axel, you will be forever in our blue and white hearts.”
The tragedy also touched the heart of Antoine Dupont, captain of the French national rugby team. He shared a fundraising effort initiated by Morgane, Axel’s sister, to support the family during this tough time. The online fundraising drive quickly surpassed €20,000.
Driver Faces Serious Charges
The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident sustained only minor injuries. Gendarmes detected alcohol in the driver’s system and subsequently placed him in pre-trial detention. He faces charges of manslaughter by a driver in a state of drunkenness.
