Canada’s Badminton stars Shine at Pan American Cup
Team Canada’s badminton squad, fueled by Varsity Blues talent, claimed the 2025 Pan American Cup mixed team championship in Aguas Calientes, mexico. The victory, a resounding 3-1 triumph over Team USA, capped a remarkable run through the tournament.
Dominating the Pool Play
Canada’s path to the gold medal was paved with extraordinary pool play performances. They swept aside Mexico and Cuba, both victories by a decisive 5-0 margin. Then, in the semifinals, they dispatched Guatemala 3-1, showcasing their formidable strength.
A Team Effort
“This victory is a testament to the collective effort of the entire team,” stated Canadian national team head coach Mike Butler. “Every player contributed significantly, making this a truly team-oriented triumph.”
Varsity Blues’ Impact
Several current Varsity blues badminton stars were integral to Team Canada’s success. 2025 OUA Badminton Female MVP Jacqueline Cheung and 2025 OUA badminton all-star Jackie Dent,both key contributors to the Blues’ recent OUA Championship victory,played pivotal roles.the team also included Varsity Blues alumni Jonathan Lai and four-time Olympian Michelle Li.
Qualifying for the World Stage
This impressive victory has earned Team Canada a coveted spot at the 2025 Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, China. The team will represent the Americas on the world stage from April 27 to May 4.
