Chasing Johannes Thingnes Bö down the final lap is a thankless task in biathlon. The Norwegian is a relentless force on the final stretch. But Justus Strelow had no choice on Thursday afternoon in the Biathlon Arena in Lenzerheide. With a 18.5-second lead on Bö, the german left the shooting range in the single mixed relay, needing to defend his silver medal.
Strelow’s Gritty Bronze in Lenzerheide
The final sprint was a brutal test of will. “painful” was how Strelow described having to run ahead of Bö, the Norwegian surging past him in the final meters. Despite the agonizing finish, Strelow and his relay partner, Franziska Preuss, secured a well-deserved bronze medal.
A Triumphant Team Effort
The German duo’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. With only four missed shots, they were among the top teams at the shooting range, with only Poland and Ukraine matching their accuracy, tho they were significantly further back in the race. france, the world champions in the non-Olympic discipline, shot seven extra rounds, while Norway used 15 extra cartridges. Switzerland narrowly missed a first World Cup medal, finishing fourth.
A New Era for German Biathlon?
The single mixed relay has only been part of the World Championships for six years. The only previous German medal came in Antholz in 2020, when Erik Lesser and Preuss won silver. “I think we’re on the way to becoming experts in the single mixed,” said sports director Felix Bitterling. The German duo’s eight clean shooting rounds were a key factor in their success in Lenzerheide. Both Preuss and Strelow had to reload twice, but maintained a clear focus on the top positions. “The two did that fantastically,” Bitterling noted.
Bö Beaten at the Range
Even though the final sprint wasn’t enough for silver, there was a significant victory: Johannes Thingnes Bö was beaten at the shooting range. He had to reload seven times.
Strelow, reflecting on the race, stated, “There are worse things than losing to him in the last few meters. We can be very satisfied.” Preuss echoed this sentiment, highlighting their four medals from five races in Switzerland.
