Mattia Zaccagni credits coach Marco Baroni for instilling a winning mindset in Lazio during their Europa League campaign this season, emphasizing the team’s relentless drive to triumph over Real Sociedad.
Lazio seized control early in the match, with Mario Gila’s opening goal and a crucial goal-line clearance setting the tone. Their dominance was further solidified when Aihan Munoz was sent off after receiving a second yellow card in the 30th minute.
“Our journey in Europe has been remarkable. We approached each match with unwavering determination. While many doubted us, we stayed focused and took it step by step, which is why we’re thrilled with our progress,” Zaccagni shared with Sky Sport Italy.

Historically, Lazio has excelled in the Champions League, often treating the Europa League as a secondary competition with frequent squad rotations. However, this season has marked a shift in their approach.
“Coach Baroni has instilled a consistent mindset in us. Whether it’s Europe, Serie A, or the Coppa Italia, we approach every tournament with the same intensity. Maintaining this focus is crucial for our success,” Zaccagni explained.
Zaccagni has flourished in recent seasons, thriving in Lazio’s aggressive attacking setup. His evolution from a central midfielder to a goal-scoring threat has been a key factor in the team’s success.
“my confidence has grown considerably, and it’s made a big difference. I started my career in midfield, focusing more on creating chances than scoring. Now, my finishing has improved, but the priority is always the team’s success, irrespective of who scores,” he added.
With serie A securing five Champions League spots this season and likely to repeat the feat next year, lazio’s strong European performances are also enhancing their domestic form.
“The coach reminded us that a win tonight would set the tone for our upcoming match against Fiorentina,” Zaccagni continued. “Victories bring positivity to training and boost our confidence. Even though a draw might have sufficed, we played with the determination to win, and it paid off.”
