Initially, the transition from junior to U23 seemed daunting, but appearances were misleading.Despite dropping to 44th place early on, it wasn’t due to her abilities.
“Right after the start, her wheel clipped the rider ahead, and another competitor collided with her from the side. It wasn’t a lapse in focus—she was simply caught in an unfortunate position,” explained her coach, Branislav Kacina, in an interview with Sportnet.
Undeterred, Chladoňová mounted a remarkable comeback. The course’s layout played to her strengths, enabling her to overtake competitors and clock two of the fastest laps.
She capitalized on the leading group’s cautious approach in technical sections, narrowing the gap to the frontrunners.By the final lap, she was within striking distance of the world’s top cyclists.
In a thrilling finish, she overtook French cyclist Amandine Fouquenet, securing 10th place overall and third in the under-23 division.
Was a Higher Finish Possible?
Her coach confessed to being moved to tears by her performance, though he noted that her success wasn’t entirely unexpected.
“It’s hard to gauge the planning levels of her competitors. Additionally,Viki is competing in a new category with a significant age gap—18 versus 22 makes a difference,” her coach remarked.
“While I’m amazed by her performance, it’s also expected given her talent and progress. She has immense potential that’s yet to be fully unlocked,” he added.
Fans speculated whether Chladoňová could have placed higher had she avoided the early collision and started closer to the front.
“It’s impossible to predict how things would have unfolded if she’d been in the led group from the start. Racing from the front is different from chasing, but I believe she could have maintained the pace.
I was curious to see how she’d handle the extended race duration—45-50 minutes rather of 35. The energy spent catching up was significant, but I’m very pleased with her performance,” the coach concluded.

She even surpassed junior world champion Gery, who struggled to maintain her early lead due to poor energy management.
