A legacy of Quarterback excellence: Tom Clements Retires from the Green Bay Packers
After an illustrious 25-year career mentoring some of the NFL’s moast iconic quarterbacks, Tom Clements has decided to hang up his coaching clipboard. The 71-year-old veteran, who rejoined the Green Bay Packers in 2022 for a second stint with the organization, announced his retirement during head coach Matt LaFleur’s season-ending press conference.
LaFleur, visibly emotional, praised Clements’ unwavering dedication and impact on the team. “It’s been an incredible journey these past three years,” LaFleur shared. “Tom is a true legend,a constant source of wisdom and inspiration. He’s guided some of the greatest quarterbacks in the game, from Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers to the development of Jordan Love.His contributions to this organization are immeasurable, and he will be deeply missed.”
Clements’ coaching journey began after a successful playing career. As quarterback for the University of Notre Dame, he led the Fighting Irish to a national championship in 1973. He then spent 12 seasons in the Canadian Football League, earning the league’s Most Valuable Player award in 1987 and hoisting the coveted Gray Cup with the Ottawa Rough riders in 1976 and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in 1984.
His coaching career spanned decades and multiple franchises. After a four-year stint as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Notre Dame, Clements embarked on a journey through the NFL, serving as quarterback coach for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, and Pittsburgh Steelers. He also held the offensive coordinator position for the Buffalo Bills before landing in Green Bay in 2006.During his first tenure with the Packers, Clements played a pivotal role in the development of both Favre and Rodgers, two quarterbacks who would go on to achieve legendary status.After a brief departure, clements returned to Green Bay in 2022 to mentor Jordan Love, the Packers’ future franchise quarterback.
Clements’ retirement marks the end of an era for the Green Bay Packers. His legacy, however, will continue to inspire generations of quarterbacks and coaches to come.

Roman: Thanks for having me. It’s an honor to talk about Tom.
Moderator: Tom Clements is truly a titan in the world of quarterback coaching. His resume speaks for itself: Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Jordan Love all benefitted from his guidance. What do you think set Tom apart as a coach?
Roman: You know, Tom wasn’t just about Xs and Os. He truly understood the mental game. Quarterback is a position unlike any other. It takes more than just arm talent; it takes leadership,composure,and the ability to make split-second decisions under immense pressure. Tom had this uncanny ability to connect with quarterbacks on that level, building their confidence and helping them reach their full potential.
Moderator: Cumming back to Green Bay twice speaks volumes about his connection with the franchise.What are your thoughts on his decision to retire,after dedicating so much to the game?
Roman: It’s bittersweet,isn’t it? It’s never easy to say goodbye to something you’ve been so passionate about. But after 25 years, Tom has earned his rest. He’s leaving behind an incredible legacy, and the impact he’s had on the quarterback position is immeasurable.
Moderator: Absolutely. Now, Green Bay faces a new era with Jordan Love at the helm. Do you think Tom’s influence will continue to be felt, even in his absence?
Roman: Without a doubt. tom planted the seeds. Jordan has learned from one of the best, and that foundation will serve him well. It’ll be interesting to see how Jordan develops, but he’s in good hands with the Packers organization.
Moderator: Roman, looking back on your own illustrious career, what advice would you give a young quarterback just starting out?
roman: Always believe in yourself. Even when faced with adversity, never lose that fire. Surround yourself with great coaches and teammates who will push you to be your best. And most importantly, remember to enjoy the journey. This game is a privilege.
