The NBA has long honored the legacy of Dr.Martin Luther King Jr. during MLK Day. Traditionally, games are held in cities significant to King’s life: Washington DC, home to the Martin luther King Jr. Memorial; Atlanta, where he lived and was laid to rest; and Memphis, the site of the National Civil Rights Museum and the tragic location of his assassination in 1968. However, due to scheduling conflicts with two major events this year, Memphis was the sole city among the three to host an NBA game on January 20th.
The Washington Wizards were unable to host a game on MLK Day due to the Presidential Inauguration scheduled for the same day. Similarly, the Atlanta Hawks had to forgo their game as of the College Football Playoff National Championship clash between Ohio State and Notre Dame. Meanwhile, the Memphis Grizzlies took center stage, hosting the Minnesota Timberwolves in one of the league’s seven MLK Day matchups. This game was held just blocks away from the National Civil Rights Museum, a poignant reminder of King’s enduring impact. dr. King, a Baptist minister, philosopher, and civil rights leader, championed nonviolence during the Civil Rights Movement. His life was tragically cut short on April 4, 1968, outside the Lorraine Hotel in memphis. In 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed the King Holiday Bill, designating the third monday of January as a federal holiday. This year, the NBA’s theme for MLK Day was the powerful message: “The time is always right to do what is right.” To honor King, all 30 NBA teams wore black t-shirts during pre-game warmups, emblazoned with the words “Honor King” on the front. Players were encouraged to wear these shirts during MLK Day games, and teams without weekend games were asked to don them in the days following. Paolo Banchero of the Orlando Magic expressed his enthusiasm for celebrating King’s legacy during their Sunday game against the Denver Nuggets. “MLK Day has been a part of my life forever,” Banchero shared with Andscape.
“Basketball and MLK Day are inseparable for me. I’ve played in MLK tournaments every year, from elementary school to AAU to high school. No matter when the holiday falls, I believe there should always be great basketball to mark the occasion. And we all know the profound impact Martin Luther King had, not just on our nation, but on the entire world.”
“His message of unity and love transcends skin color. Today, the NBA is a testament to that vision. Players from diverse backgrounds, races, and religions come together in one league, competing and collaborating. None of this would have been possible without Martin Luther King’s legacy. Celebrating this day, especially through basketball, is always an honor.”
