SUNY Cobleskill Women’s Basketball: A Season of Growth and Resilience
Megan Bowman, head coach of the SUNY Cobleskill women’s basketball team, has a clear outlook on her team’s journey this season. Despite recent setbacks, her optimism remains unwavering.
The Fighting Tigers, now 5-2 in the North Atlantic Conference and 15-4 faced tough losses against Husson (75-70) and Maine Maritime (61-57) last weekend. The latter game was a rematch of last year’s NAC championship, where Maine Maritime emerged victorious with a 78-62 win.
“Last year, we cruised to the championship game without much resistance,” Bowman reflected. “This past weekend, we dominated statistically but struggled to maintain our identity throughout all four quarters. That’s the next step for us.”
Learning from Close Defeats
Aside from a lopsided 119-55 loss to NCAA Division III champion New York University, the Tigers’ other three defeats highlight their potential. In a 70-61 loss to then-No. 15 Gettysburg, Cobleskill held a 23-11 lead in the second quarter. Against Husson, they were up 25-14 in the fourth quarter, and versus Maine Maritime, they rallied to a 23-12 advantage in the final period.
Bowman emphasized the importance of her key players stepping up in critical moments. Seniors Logan Thayne, Antonia May, and Cara Walker, while talented, didn’t take enough shots or assert themselves late in the Husson game.
“Improving in less than 24 hours is tough, but I challenged our leaders to take charge,” bowman saeid. “Against maine Maritime, our shooting wasn’t at its best, but I’m proud they embraced the duty to take those shots.”
Standout Performances and Team Chemistry
This season has been another strong one for Cobleskill, with notable victories over Tufts, Union, and RPI. Thayne, the league’s Defensive Player of the Year, is averaging 18.6 points, 12.8 rebounds, and 1.67 blocks per game. May has been a force with 15.1 points,6.6 rebounds, and 2.6 assists, while Walker contributes 10.6 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.2 assists.Taylor Meacham, another senior, is averaging 10.1 points and 5.2 rebounds.
“Antonia’s third-team all-conference nod last year felt like an understatement,” Bowman said.“This year, she’s proven she’s among the league’s elite. Logan’s double-double averages and Taylor’s career-high scoring are testaments to their growth.”
May echoed the team’s collective mindset: “Each of us brings something unique to the court. we complement each other and work as a unit.”
Overcoming Adversity and Looking Ahead
Both Bowman and May acknowledged the challenges the team faced in the fourth quarter against Maine Maritime. “We need to focus on what we can control—effort, attitude, and planning,” May said. “This loss will fuel us to work harder. We don’t want to feel this way again.”
Bowman shared a similar sentiment: “On the drive home, I kept thinking we were the better team. We just need to focus on our strengths and execute.”
With the Western Division hosting this year’s league tournament, the Tigers are in a strong position. Cobleskill is undefeated at home (9-0) and has two remaining conference games on their court.
“If we finish strong and win our last two regular-season games, teams will be wary of facing us at home,” Bowman said.“Our local support has been incredible, and our goal is to maintain our perfect home record. A loss here and there doesn’t define us—our mission is clear.”
