Im Mittelpunkt des Interesses standen die beiden deutschen Nachwuchsstars Hannes Steinbach (18/ Würzburg) und Johann Grünloh (19/ Vechta). Beide streben einen Wechsel in die USA an: Während Grünloh sich für den NBA-Draft angemeldet hat, plant Steinbach zunächst eine Karriere im College-Basketball.

Das direkte Duell gewann Steinbach (zehn Punkte,elf Rebounds) gegen Grünloh (vier Punkte,acht Rebounds),doch das Spiel entschied Vechta mit 86:74 für sich.
In front of 2,951 spectators, including Holger Geschwindner (79), the man who discovered Dirk Nowitzki, Steinbach and Grünloh were named in the starting lineups of their respective teams. For the first three quarters, both players remained relatively quiet—but then, in a dramatic turn of events, all the scouts in attendance were left on the edge of their seats.

26th Minute: Grünloh battles under the basket with Würzburg’s Owen Klassen, taking a hard hit to his forearm. Grimacing in pain, Grünloh clutches his wrist and struggles to continue.
The center manages to stay on the court for nearly two more minutes before being forced to leave the game.

Nach einer kurzen Behandlung außerhalb des Spielfelds kehrt er kurz vor Spielende zurück – mit einem bandagierten linken Handgelenk. Allerdings wirkt die Situation nicht optimal. Grünloh greift sich wiederholt an die verletzte Hand und schützt sie mit seiner rechten. Als er später unter dem gegnerischen Korb angespielt wird, verliert er den Ball, obwohl der Druck nicht besonders hoch war.
Nach nur zweieinhalb Minuten holt ihn Trainer Martin Schiller wieder von der Bank. Trotzdem gewinnt sein Team das Spiel souverän. Eine genaue Diagnose stand nach dem Spiel noch aus. Vechta hofft, dass es sich beim Center nur um eine Prellung handelt.

Max ugrai von Würzburg zeigt sich enttäuscht: „Uns fehlte die nötige Energie. Wir hatten zu wenig Kreativität, um die einfachen Punkte zu erzielen.“
