Westbrook Finds his Groove in Denver
Russell Westbrook is thriving with the Denver Nuggets, rediscovering his dynamic playstyle under the guidance of Coach Mike Malone. The duo recently made history, achieving back-to-back triple-doubles on the same night, a feat rarely seen in the NBA. Westbrook credits Malone’s straightforward approach and trust in his abilities for this resurgence.
“He was wholly honest with me, and that’s all I needed,” Westbrook shared. “He outlined his expectations, emphasizing that he wanted me to be myself, to be ‘Russ.’ He wanted me to bring energy, toughness, and help my teammates reach their full potential. This is just the beginning, and when we’re fully healthy, we’ll be a force to be reckoned with.”
The Nuggets are already proving to be a formidable opponent, currently holding the 4th seed in the Western Conference despite missing key player Aaron Gordon for significant stretches due to injury. While Malone has had to deliver some impassioned speeches after disappointing losses, his players, especially Westbrook, have largely met his expectations.
Malone’s coaching beliefs centers around empowering Westbrook to utilize his full skillset. “I challenged Russell to strive for his best self,” Malone explained. “Without intending any disrespect to his previous coaches, simply placing him in the corner doesn’t maximize his talents. This season, we’re actively putting the ball in his hands, allowing him to orchestrate the offence.”
Westbrook’s notable performance over the past 10 games, averaging 15.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 7.6 assists per game, suggests that the Nuggets may have secured one of the best offseason acquisitions.
Malone praises Westbrook’s humility and willingness to integrate seamlessly into the team. “Russell deserves immense credit,” Malone stated. “He came here focused on fitting in, not standing out. There are moments when watching him and Nikola play together, their synergy is truly remarkable.”
Is Russell Westbrook Back? Coach malone and the Nuggets Spark “Russ” Renaissance
Welcome back to Courtside Chat! Today,we’re joined by three-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer,Charles Barkley. Chuck, thanks for joining us!
Charles Barkley: Always a pleasure, man. Let’s talk hoops!
Let’s dive right in. Russell Westbrook is in Denver now, playing with a renewed energy. We’re seeing glimpses of the explosive “Russ” we remember. What are yoru thoughts on his resurgence with the Nuggets?
Barkley: Well, first off, let me say I’m happy to see Russ find his groove again. He’s a fierce competitor and a joy to watch when he’s playing with that fire in his belly.Denver seems like a good fit. coach Malone is letting him be himself, giving him the freedom to create, and it’s paying off.
It truly seems like Coach Malone’s straight-talking approach has been a key factor. Westbrook mentioned Malone’s honesty and trust in him. Is that the kind of coaching approach that works best for star athletes like Westbrook?
Barkley: You know, Chuck, it depends on the player. Some guys thrive on tough love, that old-school, “my way or the highway” stuff. Others need a gentler touch, more guidance and encouragement. With Russ, I think he needs someone who respects his game, who understands his weaknesses but also plays to his strengths. Coach Malone seems to be doing that.
The Nuggets are a formidable team now, even with Aaron Gordon missing significant time. What do you think they need to do to compete for a championship this year?
Barkley: They need everyone healthy for a start. Losing Gordon hurts,he’s a crucial piece of their puzzle. But beyond that, they need to find consistency. This Denver team has the talent, but they can be inconsistent at times. They need to bring that energy and intensity every night.
Now, let’s talk about the back-to-back triple-doubles Westbrook and Malone achieved. A truly remarkable feat. What does that say about their chemistry and how they are both feeding off each other’s success?
Barkley: That’s impressive, there’s no doubt whatsoever about it. Shows you what Russ is capable of when he’s got the right system and the right coach behind him. And Malone letting him run the offense like that, it’s working. They’re feeding off each other’s energy and feeding the whole team.
Do you think Westbrook can maintain this level of play throughout the season, and can the Nuggets translate this into a deep playoff run?
barkley: It’s a long season, man. A lot can happen. But if Westbrook stays healthy and Malone keeps this team focused, I wouldn’t bet against them. They’ve got a real shot.
