Panama’s Triumph: An Interview with Olympian Atheyna Bylon
Welcome back, sports fans! Today, we have the incredible honor of speaking with Panama’s own Atheyna Bylon, the boxing silver medalist from the Paris 2024 Olympics. Atheyna, welcome to the show!
Atheyna: thank you so much for having me! It’s always a pleasure to talk about the Games and the incredible journey we all shared.
Moderator: Absolutely! Panama’s eight-member delegation really made a splash in Paris. As the team leader and a veteran Olympian, what are some of your biggest takeaways from these Games?
Atheyna: Honestly, the biggest takeaway for me was the immense pride I felt representing Panama on such a global stage. Every athlete on our team poured their heart and soul into preparing, and witnessing their dedication, especially from someone like Hillary Heron who truly shone in gymnastics, was inspiring. There’s a real sense, I think, that Panamanian athletics are ourselves on the rise.
Moderator: You mentioned Hillary Heron achieving a historic feat in gymnastics. As a seasoned competitor yourself, what does a moment like that mean for the future of a sport in Panama?
Atheyna: It’s monumental. Achieving something that’s never been done before – that kind of performance establishes a new benchmark,a new level of expectation. Young athletes across Panama see what’s possible, what can be achieved with hard work, discipline, and dedication. I truly believe Hilary’s success will spark a passion for gymnastics in Panama and lead to future generations of talented athletes.
Moderator: And speaking of potential, your own silver medal win against China’s Li Qian was a hard-fought battle. Looking back, how satisfying is it to know you put it all on the line and came away with such a meaningful achievement for panama?
Atheyna: It’s incredibly satisfying, but to be honest, every time I step into the ring, the ultimate goal is gold. Silver is a testament to the countless hours spent training, pushing myself to the absolute limit. While I’m proud to bring this medal home to Panama, the drive to pursue that gold is relentless. Li Qian is a fantastic boxer, and that fight pushed me to my limits. There are always lessons to learn, things to improve, and that’s what keeps me motivated for the future.
