While the women’s UOP rugby team enjoys a steady course towards the top of the table, the men’s squad faces a more turbulent journey as they battle to avoid relegation.
The women’s team, a consistent force in their division for several years, continues to impress despite a few personnel changes during the summer break. While promotion to the Prenational league remains a distant goal, securing a podium finish is a realistic adn achievable target for the Massat sisters and their teammates. The upcoming matches against Portet-sur-Garonne and Lézat will be crucial tests for the Ariégeoises as they navigate the challenging weeks ahead.
In contrast, the men’s team, led by Romain Soula, finds itself in a precarious position. Their solitary victory this season, achieved in the opening match against Rijole back in September, feels like a distant memory.Since then, a string of disappointing results, both in terms of performance and scorelines, has left them languishing near the bottom of the table.Currently two wins adrift of the penultimate spot, occupied by Mas-d’auvignon Saint-Puy, the yellows and blacks face a daunting task to avoid relegation.
However, hope is not lost. Only one team is scheduled for relegation, barring any unexpected departures from Nationale 3. The upcoming away match against Frouzins, the current bottom team, presents a crucial prospect for the UOP men to turn their fortunes around. While the women’s team surges toward the top of the table, the men’s squad battles valiantly against relegation. to delve deeper into these contrasting narratives, we welcomed former UOP captain and rugby veteran Sophie Dupont for an exclusive interview.
Interviewer: Sophie, thank you for joining us. Let’s start with the women’s team. They seem to be on a promising trajectory this season.
Sophie Dupont: Absolutely! The women have been a consistent force for years now. Even with some changes in the squad over the summer, their commitment and talent are undeniable.
Interviewer: A podium finish seems within reach. How do you see the upcoming matches against Portet-sur-Garonne and Lézat factoring into their chances?
Sophie Dupont: Those are crucial fixtures, no doubt.Both teams are strong contenders, so the UOP women will need to be at their best. Their performance in these matches could very well determine their final position in the league.

Sophie Dupont: It’s been a tough season for the men, that’s without a doubt. A string of disappointing results can definitely take its toll on morale. It seems like a combination of factors – perhaps some inconsistency in performance and maybe a bit of bad luck with injuries. It’s a difficult situation to be in, but they’re a resilient bunch, and I wouldn’t count them out just yet.
Interviewer: The upcoming match against Frouzins, the current bottom team, appears to be a pivotal moment. A win could be a massive turning point for them.
Sophie Dupont: Absolutely. that’s a must-win game for them. They need to find that spark,that winning mentality,and I believe a victory against Frouzins could be the catalyst they need to turn things around.
Interviewer: On a brighter note, the UOP youth and reserve teams seem to be performing well. What’s your take on the future of UOP rugby, considering the contrasting fortunes of the senior teams?
Sophie Dupont: I’m encouraged by the performance of the younger generations.UOP has a strong tradition of nurturing young talent, and seeing the under-13s, under-15s, and the female under-15s thrive is incredibly positive. It speaks volumes about the future of the club and gives hope for brighter days ahead, nonetheless of the current challenges faced by the senior men’s team.
