Paige VanZant makes a Comeback: Embracing a New Chapter in MMA with the GFL
Paige vanzant, the charismatic fighter known for her striking style and captivating personality, is making a highly anticipated return to the world of MMA. After departing from the UFC in 2020 with a 5-4 record, which included a memorable knockout victory over Bec Rawlings, VanZant explored other combat sports avenues. Now, she’s set her sights on a fresh start with the newly established Global Fight League (GFL).
VanZant announced her GFL signing on her podcast, “Paige and Austin: A Kickass Love Story,” expressing her excitement for this new chapter. “I’m shifting gears again,” she declared, “I’m going to shock the world again.” She emphasized the appeal of the GFL’s unique approach, stating, ”They offered me a contract and I said, ‘Yes.’ It’s the perfect possibility becuase I definitely didn’t leave MMA because I stopped enjoying it. Now there’s a new MMA institution that actually has me excited enough to fight for it.”
The GFL has garnered attention for its athlete-centric model, offering competitive pay, a pension fund, and health insurance benefits. VanZant highlighted these advantages, stating, “They’re doing a pension fund for the fighters and I think health insurance too… You just never know when it’s going to end, so I want to do everything I can to make as much money as I can while I can and be able to provide for my family forever.”
VanZant joins a roster of notable fighters in the GFL, including former UFC champions Tyron Woodley, Luke Rockhold, Benson Henderson, Anthony Pettis, Andrei Arlovski, Frank Mir, Fabricio Werdum, and Junior dos Santos. Other prominent names include Wanderlei Silva, Alex Gustafsson, Hector Lombard, Thiago Santos, Kevin Lee, Jeremy Stephens, Marlon Moraes, Gegard Mousasi, Greg Hardy, and many more.
while the GFL’s commitment to fighter welfare has been praised, the organization has also faced criticism for its focus on signing established veterans, many of whom are in their forties and fifties. This strategy has sparked debate about the balance between experience and the need to nurture emerging talent within the league.

B.J. Penn: It’s a pleasure to be here. Always happy to talk MMA.
Today, we’re diving deep into the news surrounding Paige VanZant’s return to the world of MMA, but she’s taking a bold leap – signing with the newly formed Global Fight League, or GFL. What are your initial thoughts on Paige’s decision?
B.J. Penn: I have a lot of respect for Paige as a fighter. she’s always been exciting to watch, and her striking is top-notch. Going to the GFL is captivating though. It’s a new association, and it’ll be fascinating to see how they establish themselves.
They’re making waves with their fighter-centric approach – things like pension funds and health insurance for fighters. This is a huge change for MMA, and it might very well be a real game changer for fighters’ long-term well-being. What do you think about this approach?
B.J. Penn: Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to me.Fighters put their bodies on the line every time they step into the cage. Having some security for life after fighting is crucial. I wish something like this existed when I was competing.
The GFL is attracting some big names, former UFC champions like Tyron Woodley, Luke Rockhold and Benson Henderson. On the surface, their roster is impressive. But one criticism they’ve faced is their focus on signing established veterans, manny of whom are past their prime. Is the GFL missing an possibility to build new stars?
B.J. Penn: That’s a good point. While experience is valuable, you need exciting young talent to build a enduring future for any organization. It’s crucial for the GFL to find a balance. They can attract seasoned veterans for headline fights and build competition, but they need to invest in developing future superstars too.
Paige herself has spoken about how much excitement she has for this new chapter. Do you think the GFL can provide a platform for her to truly shine and potentially even reclaim a championship?
B.J. Penn: If anyone can achieve that, it’s Paige. She’s got the talent and the charisma. The GFL needs to give her the platform and opportunities to show what she can do. It’ll be a great story if she can become their champion.
what are your thoughts on this new league and the impact it could have on MMA as a whole?
B.J. Penn: It’s early days for the GFL, but they’ve stirred things up. Competition is good for the sport. If they can sustain their fighter-focused approach, they have the potential to really shake things up and offer fighters a better future.
It’ll be exciting to watch how Paige performs in her new surroundings.Fans will be watching her closely to see if she can reach new heights with the GFL. This is just the beginning of an interesting journey.
