The NFL Goes global: Colts to headline Historic game in Madrid
The National Football League (NFL) is making waves internationally, announcing a groundbreaking expansion of its regular season games beyond US borders. In a historic move, the Indianapolis Colts will be the home team for the first-ever NFL regular season game to be held at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium in 2025.
This exciting development comes on the heels of the NFL’s announcement last Friday that the New York Jets, Cleveland Browns, and Jacksonville Jaguars will also be hosting international home games in London during the 2025 season.The 2025 season is set to be a landmark year for the NFL’s global reach, with up to eight regular season games scheduled to take place outside the United States – the highest number ever.
While three matches are confirmed for London, fans in Madrid are also in for a treat. The iconic Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, home to Real Madrid, will host a thrilling NFL matchup, marking a meaningful milestone for the league’s presence in Spain.
Adding to the anticipation, the NFL is actively exploring additional international venues for the 2025 season, with Ireland, Brazil (for the second consecutive year), and Mexico being strong contenders.The specific opponents for the Colts, Jets, Browns, and Jaguars in their international games will be revealed when the 2025 NFL schedule is unveiled in a few months.
“Following the success of four international games in Munich and Frankfurt, we are thrilled to have the Colts as the designated team for our inaugural regular season game in Berlin in 2025,” said Alexander Steinforth, General Manager of NFL germany. “Berlin is a vibrant city that perfectly embodies the NFL’s international growth and expansion.”
Germany has already proven to be a receptive market for the NFL. In 2022, Munich hosted the first-ever regular season game in Germany, witnessing Tom Brady’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeat the Seattle Seahawks at the Allianz Arena. Frankfurt followed suit in 2023, hosting two thrilling matchups at Deutsche Bank Park: the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory over the Miami Dolphins and the Colts’ triumph over the New England Patriots.
The Allianz Arena welcomed the NFL once again last season, with the Carolina Panthers edging out the New York Giants in a close encounter.
“The NFL has evolved into a global brand, and we are eager to expand its presence in Germany and connect with ‘Colts Nation’ worldwide,” stated Colts owner jim Irsay. “This game presents a unique chance to achieve that goal.”

If the international fanbase continues to grow and the demand is there, anything is possible. we’ve already seen successful international series games, so a dedicated European team could be the natural next progression.
Moderator: With teams like the Rams and the Jaguars already venturing to London, and now the Colts heading to Berlin, what cities could be next for NFL International Series games?
Kurt Warner: I’d love to see the NFL tap into newer markets like Ireland, perhaps Dublin with its thriving sports culture.Mexico City, with its passionate fan base, is another prime candidate.
Moderator: Some critics argue that expanding internationally could possibly dilute the NFL’s brand and product. What’s your take on that?
Kurt Warner: I disagree. The NFL is a global brand with immense global appeal.Expanding thoughtfully can only strengthen the brand. It introduces new fans to the sport, grows the revenue base, and showcases the talent and athleticism of NFL players on a broader stage. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
