The 17th edition of the Llodio Popular Race saw a surge of athletic spirit and community engagement on a crisp autumn afternoon. ismail Chkchichekh and Oihane Salcedo emerged victorious in the menS and women’s categories respectively, setting a new record for the event sponsored by EL MAIL.
Chkchichekh dominated the nearly 8-kilometer urban course, which wound through Gardea and back along the scenic Nervión riverbank, finishing with an impressive time of 24 minutes and 26 seconds. Ander Uribe trailed behind by 37 seconds, securing second place with a time of 25 minutes and 3 seconds. Ander Díez rounded out the podium, finishing almost a minute behind the leader at 25 minutes and 24 seconds.
In the women’s race, Salcedo took command after the halfway point, ultimately crossing the finish line in 31 minutes and 41 seconds. Garazi Uribarri followed closely behind, clocking in at 32 minutes and 19 seconds. Local athlete Leire Zaballa secured third place with a time of 33 minutes and 20 seconds, earning enthusiastic cheers from the crowd alongside fellow runners Koldo Extebarría and Estíbaliz Arteta.
While the competitive spirit was palpable, the true essence of the Llodio Popular race lay in the vibrant community atmosphere. Nearly 300 participants, fueled by camaraderie and a shared love for running, gathered in Plaza Aldai for the 5:00 p.m. start. The air buzzed with anticipation as runners chatted, stretched, and warmed up, their energy amplified by the excited cheers of children who eagerly awaited their own races.
This year’s event marked a triumphant shift in scheduling. Traditionally held on Sunday mornings, the race was moved to Saturday afternoon to accommodate the calendar of the Llodio federated athletics school, allowing many participants to also compete in the Ordizia cross the following day. This strategic change did not deter participation, with 292 adult athletes taking to the streets, mirroring record numbers from previous years. An additional 250 young runners, divided into three age categories (0-6, 7-10, and 11-15), added to the festive atmosphere, sprinting off at 6:15 p.m.
The Llodio Popular Race wasn’t the only sporting highlight for the town that weekend. Ayal sports enthusiasts celebrated a scoreless draw between Amurrio and Llodio in a soccer match, while cadet Mikel Llorente secured a commendable fourth place in the Spanish cyclocross championship, bringing further pride to the valley.
