## Gimnasia Kicks Off Preseason with Kind Matches in Uruguay
Gimnasia is gearing up for the new season with a series of friendly matches in Uruguay. After a disappointing 2024 campaign, the team, lead by coach Marcelo Méndez, is undergoing a squad overhaul to bolster its competitiveness in the upcoming Professional League tournaments. [[1]]
The first test comes tonight against defensor Sporting at the Luis Franzini stadium in Montevideo. This match marks the beginning of the Río de la Plata Series, a series of friendlies designed to prepare teams for the upcoming season. [[2]]
Several new faces have joined Gimnasia’s ranks, including goalkeeper Luis Ingolotti, center backs Gastón suso, Renzo Gianpaoli, and Juan Manuel villalba, and left back Pedro Silva Torrejón. The club is also actively pursuing the return of central midfielder Rodrigo Saravia from Russian club Rostov.
While some of these reinforcements are expected to feature tonight, others, like Gianpaoli, who only arrived yesterday, will need more time to integrate with the squad. Méndez is expected to field a starting lineup that includes Suso, Nelson insfrán in goal, and Diego Mastrángelo at left back.
In midfield, Nicolás Garayalde will partner with Lucas castro and Martín Fernández, providing a solid foundation for the team. Upfront, Méndez is relying on the recovery of Matías Abaldo and Norberto Briasco to fill the void left by Rodrigo Castillo.
Following tonight’s match, Gimnasia will face the Uruguay Under 20 National Team at the Centenario Stadium tomorrow and Cerro Largo at the Franzini stadium on saturday, providing valuable opportunities for the team to gel and fine-tune its tactics.
Defensor Sporting, meanwhile, has also been active in the transfer market, bringing in Federico Marchesini, Kevin Altez, and Lucas Machado. The team is coached by Álvaro Navarro, a former Gimnasia player, adding an interesting subplot to the encounter.
Other familiar faces in the Defensor Sporting squad include Claudio Paul Spinelli, who had a brief stint with Gimnasia in 2019, and Argentine veteran Walter Montoya, formerly of Rosario Central and Racing Club.
With both teams eager to impress in thier preseason preparations, tonight’s match promises to be an exciting affair. [[3]]
Gimnasia’s Preseason: A Fresh start with Familiar Faces?
Welcome back, everyone, to another edition of “in the Spotlight!” Today, I’m joined by former Argentine international andrenowned football analyst, Diego Latorre.Diego, thanks for taking the time to shed some light on Gimnasia’s pre-season preparations in Uruguay.
Diego: Always a pleasure, it’s exciting to see gimnasia gearing up for a new season after a tough 2024.
Moderator: Absolutely. A raft of new signings have joined the squad, including Luis Ingolotti and Gaston Suso. It seems coach Marcelo Mendez is looking to solidify the backline. What are your thoughts on these additions, Diego?
Diego: Well, it’s clear Mendez wants to address Gimnasia’s defensive vulnerabilities from last season. Ingolotti brings experience from his time in the primera División, and Suso, though young, showed great promise during his stint at Rosario Central. They certainly have the potential to form a strong partnership.
Moderator:
And it wouldn’t be a proper Gimnasia overhaul without a midfield shakeup. They’re chasing Rodrigo Saravia’s return from Russia. how crucial woudl his return be for the team’s midfield dynamic?
Diego: saravia’s return would be massive, no question. His energy, composure, and play-making ability were sorely missed last season. He’s the kind of player who can dictate the tempo and unlock defenses.
Moderator: We certainly know Mendez is also relying on veterans like Matías Abaldo and Norberto Briasco upfront. Is this the right approach, sticking with experienced players, or should Gimnasia be looking for younger attacking options?
Diego: That’s a tactical dilemma, isn’t it? Abaldo and Briasco provide proven goal-scoring threat, but there’s always room for youth. Perhaps Mendez could integrate some promising youngsters from the reserves to inject some fresh blood into the attack.

Tonight’s match against Defensor Sporting is a crucial first test. Defensor, under Alvaro navarro, has also been busy in the transfer market. Navarro also has that Gimnasia connection, having played there earlier in his career. Does this add another layer of intrigue to the encounter?
Diego: Definitely! Knowing both teams well, this becomes more than just a pleasant. There’s an element of pride at stake. Both coaches will wont to make a statement and get their seasons off to a positive start.
Moderator: Absolutely. Defensor also has some familiar faces like Claudio Paul Spinelli and Walter montoya. Will their experience be a key factor against Gimnasia?
Diego: Yes, they provide valuable experience and leadership, especially in a pre-season match. It’ll be fascinating to see how Gimnasia’s new signings handle the pressure
Moderator: Diego, what are your expectations for Gimnasia this season?
Diego: With the new additions and a talented core,Gimnasia has the potential to be a serious contender. It ultimately comes down to how quickly these new players gel and how well Mendez utilizes the squad’s strengths.
