Back In Teh Game: An Exclusive Interview with Gary Neville
Football fans, we’re back! 2025 kicks off with a bang as European leagues roar back to life after the holidays. There’s a whirlwind of matches to look forward to, and to dissect it all, we’ve got a true legend of the game joining us: Manchester united icon and renowned commentator Gary Neville. Welcome, Gary!
Gary: Thanks for having me! It’s grate to be back talking football. This first week is jam-packed, isn’t it?
That it is! The Italian Super Cup kicks things off with Inter Milan versus Atalanta. Lautaro Martínez has been in fantastic form for Inter. Do you think they have the edge?
Gary: inter are certainly strong contenders, and Lautaro is a real force. But Atalanta are never to be underestimated. They’ve got fantastic energy and a knack for upsetting the bigger teams. It’ll be a close one, I reckon.
Then we move on to la Liga. real Madrid travel to Valencia. They’re chasing the league leaders. How crucial is this match for them?
Gary: Massive. They can’t afford to fall further behind. Valencia will be tough opponents at home, but Real Madrid have that winning mentality. Karim Benzema finding his scoring touch again would be a huge boost for them.
Let’s talk about the Premier League. Chelsea against Crystal Palace is first up. Enzo Fernández has been a real spark for them. Do you see them closing the gap on Liverpool?
Gary: Enzo has definitely brought that creative spark Chelsea desperately needed. It’s a tall order to catch Liverpool, but if they can maintain consistency, they’ll be right in the mix for a Champions League spot.
The clash between Manchester City and West Ham is always a captivating one. Can you see City picking up where they left off pre-holiday?
Gary: City have a relentless winning machine. They seem to have found their rhythm again after that blip. West Ham will make it arduous, but City’s quality should shine through.
Liverpool facing Manchester United, now that’s a match that needs no further introduction! This season, both teams are in the mix.How do you see this one playing out?
Gary: Oh, this one will be electric. Both teams desperate for three points, and you have world-class talent on both sides.Alexis Mac Allister adds a new dimension for Liverpool, and Lisandro Martínez has been a rock at the back for United. It could be decided by a moment of brilliance from either side.
what are your predictions for Barcelona in the copa del Rey?
Gary: Their squad depth is phenomenal. They’ll be looking to make a statement in the Copa del Rey. They’ll need to be wary of complacency though, as these lower league teams can cause upsets.
