The Eastern Province Badminton Association (EPBA) All Island Open Badminton Championship is set to take place from january 23 to 27 at the Waber Indoor Stadium in Batticaloa, with Senuk Samararatne and Rashmi Mudalige leading as the top seeds in the men’s and women’s singles categories, respectively.
This year’s tournament promises intense competition,especially in the open men’s and women’s singles events. Senuk Samararatne, representing St. Sebastians, has been in exceptional form recently, making him a strong contender for the men’s title. Niroshan Wijekoon: This tournament is a cornerstone of Sri Lankan badminton. It’s a national Ranking Level 1 competition, which means it attracts the best talent from across the contry. For young players, it’s a platform to showcase their skills and climb the rankings. For seasoned players, it’s an opportunity to cement their legacy. The fact that it’s held in Batticaloa also highlights the growing popularity of badminton in the Eastern Province, which is fantastic for the sport’s development.

Niroshan Wijekoon: Absolutely. Senuk has been consistent and dominant in recent tournaments. Representing St. Sebastians, he’s shown grate composure and skill. However, badminton is unpredictable. Players like Thilina rajakaruna and Roshan Padmakumara are no pushovers. They have the experience and technique to challenge Senuk. It’s going to be a thrilling contest.
Moderator: On the women’s side, Rashmi Mudalige is the top seed. She’s a formidable player, but she’ll face tough competition from Nethmi Ratnayake, Varangana Jayawardena, and others. Who do you think has the edge in this category?
niroshan Wijekoon: Rashmi is undoubtedly the frontrunner. She’s been a consistent performer and has the mental toughness to handle pressure. However, Nethmi Ratnayake and Varangana Jayawardena are rising stars with immense potential.
