Swedish Biathlete Elvira Öberg Faces Setback in World Cup Sprint
Elvira Öberg, the swedish biathlon star, experienced a challenging start to the resumed World Cup season in Germany.Entering the rainy and windy sprint race in second place in the overall standings, Öberg faced a significant setback after five missed shots on the range, dropping her to third place and increasing the gap to leader Franziska Preuss to 203 points.
Despite a strong start on the track, Öberg struggled on the shooting range, ultimately finishing 2 minutes and 21 seconds behind surprise winner Paula Botet of France, who shot clean.Maren kirkeede of Norway secured second place, while Milena Todorova of Bulgaria finished third.
Preuss, the current World Cup leader, also missed three shots but managed to finish ahead of Öberg in 28th place.
“I’m getting so frustrated,” Öberg admitted to SVT after the race, expressing her disappointment with her shooting performance.
Though, Öberg remains determined to fight for the overall title.
“My priority is to stay healthy and compete in every race,” she stated at a press conference earlier in the week. “Then, I need to improve my consistency on the range.”
Öberg acknowledged the significant point difference but emphasized the high number of points available in each race, keeping her hopes alive.
The Swedish team as a whole struggled in the sprint, with Öberg being the only athlete to earn World Cup points. Hanna Öberg finished 54th with five missed shots, while Anna Magnusson (four misses) and Ella Halvarsson (six misses) placed 59th and 60th respectively. Johanna Skottheim (four misses,72nd) and Anna-Karin Heijdenberg (five misses,79th after a penalty loop) will miss Saturday’s pursuit race.
