Serena Williams: Thank you for having me! It’s hard to pick just one moment as every victory felt like a milestone. But if I had to choose, I’d say winning the 2017 Australian Open while pregnant with Olympia was incredibly special. It wasn’t just about the title; it was about proving to myself and others that women can achieve greatness even while balancing personal challenges.
Moderator: That’s such a powerful moment. speaking of challenges, you’ve faced injuries, criticism, and even health scares throughout your career. How did you stay motivated during those tough times?
Serena Williams: honestly, it was my love for the game and the support of my family that kept me going. I’ve always believed that setbacks are just setups for comebacks. Every time I faced a challenge, I used it as fuel to push harder. And, of course, having my sister Venus by my side made a huge difference. We’ve always pushed each other to be better.
Moderator: That sibling rivalry must have been intense! Speaking of Venus, how do you feel about the current state of women’s tennis? Do you think the next generation is ready to carry the torch?
Serena Williams: Absolutely. players like Naomi Osaka, Iga Świątek, and coco Gauff are incredibly talented and have already made their mark. I think the future of women’s tennis is in good hands. But I also believe there’s still room for growth, especially in terms of equal pay and representation. We’ve come a long way,but there’s more work to be done.
Moderator: That’s a great point. Let’s talk about equal pay. you’ve been a vocal advocate for gender equality in sports. Do you think tennis has done enough to close the pay gap?
Serena Williams: Tennis has made significant strides, especially with Grand Slam tournaments offering equal prize money. but outside of the majors, there’s still a disparity. Women frequently enough play best-of-three sets, while men play best-of-five, and some argue that justifies the pay gap. I disagree. The effort,dedication,and entertainment value we bring are just as valuable. It’s not about the number of sets; it’s about the quality of the game.
Moderator: Well said. Shifting gears,let’s talk about your post-retirement ventures. You’ve been involved in fashion, philanthropy, and even tech investments. What drives your passion for these projects?
Serena Williams: For me,it’s about creating opportunities and giving back. I’ve been fortunate to have a platform, and I want to use it to empower others, especially women and people of color.
