Benfica Triumphs Over GDESSA in Betclic Women’s League Clash
On Sunday, January 19th, the Benfica women’s basketball team secured a decisive 74-62 victory against GDESSA at Pavilhão Fidelidade. This match marked the 15th round of the 1st phase of the Betclic Women’s League, showcasing Benfica’s dominance on the court.
Despite the absence of Sydney Brown, who was sidelined due to injury, Benfica displayed remarkable resilience and energy, contrasting sharply with the chilly weather outside. The team’s performance was a testament to their depth and determination.
GDESSA initially took the lead with the first points of the game, including a three-pointer. However, Raphaella Monteiro quickly responded for benfica, leveling the score at 3-3. This early exchange set the tone for the rest of the match.
Once Benfica gained the upper hand at 7-5, they maintained their lead throughout the game. By the end of the first quarter, they were ahead 18-13, demonstrating their strategic prowess and cohesive teamwork.
The second quarter saw Benfica extend their lead with a six-point surge, bringing the score to 24-13. This momentum continued as they outplayed GDESSA in both offense and defense, solidifying their position as a formidable contender in the league.
GDESSA was held scoreless for the first four minutes, setting the tone for the match. By halftime,Benfica had built a commanding 13-point lead,finishing the half with a score of 37-24.
In the third quarter, the reigning champions maintained their dominance, keeping the 13-point gap intact (44-31).However, GDSSA began to find their rhythm, narrowing the deficit as the game progressed.
In the closing moments, Barreiro’s squad managed to cut the lead to just five points (51-46), but a clutch basket by Raphaella Monteiro sealed the score at 53-46.
Buoyed by their strong finish in the third quarter, GDSSA started the final period with momentum. However, Benfica quickly regained control, halting their opponent’s surge and securing a comfortable 74-62 victory.
Individually, Milica Ivanovic stood out with 22 points, making the most critically important contribution to Benfica’s success.Isabela Quevedo (16), Inês Faustino, and Raphaella Monteiro (14) also delivered standout performances, rounding out the top scorers for the team.
Benfica now shifts it’s focus to the Federation Cup, with the final four set to take place next weekend. In the semi-final, Benfica will face Galitos on Saturday, January 25th, at 4:30 pm, at Pavilhão Henrique Miranda.
