Stepping Up to the Plate: An Interview with Baseball Legend, Jean-Michel Dubois
Welcome back, baseball fans! Today, we’re joined by a true icon of the sport, former French national team captain and current youth coach, Jean-Michel Dubois. Jean-Michel, still cherished for his powerful swing and leadership on the field, is now dedicating his time to nurturing a new generation of talent. We’re here to discuss the upcoming indoor tournaments hosted by the Louviers Baseball-Softball Club, and I’m eager to get your insights on these pivotal early-season matchups.
Moderator: Jean-Michel, the Louviers Wallabies are set to face some tough competition in their 15U and 12U tournaments. How important are these early indoor tournaments as a stepping stone to success in the regional championship?
Jean-Michel Dubois: These indoor tournaments are absolutely crucial, not only for gauging a team’s progress but also for building that essential team spirit and camaraderie. They offer a fantastic opportunity for young players to test their skills against some of the best teams in the country. This competition, in a compressed environment like an indoor gymnasium, helps identify strengths and weaknesses early on, allowing coaches to refine strategies before the regional championship.
Moderator: We see some formidable opponents lined up, including the Parisian PUC and the Templiers de Sénart. How do you see the Louviers 15U team standing against these champs?
JD: I believe the louviers 15U team has real potential. They defied the odds last year, winning this very tournament against a similar pool of opponents. The key will be their focus and determination. These young players have the talent, but they need to believe in themselves and play with the confidence they showed last year. [Agree, it was an inspiring victory. It proves that even the underdog can rise to the occasion with the right mindset and team cohesion. What are your thoughts on the 12U Wallabies’ chances ]
Moderator: Exactly! Moving on to the 12U division, the competition is equally fierce. The Rouen Huskies, Evry Pharaons, and Chartes Cubs are all known for their aggressive styles of play. How do you think the Wallabies can handle the pressure and rise to the challenge?
JD: This 12U tournament is a real test of grit. these teams have been playing together for a while now, and they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses. The Wallabies need to be adaptable. They can’t rely on just one playing style. They need to be able to read the game, adjust their strategies, and play smart baseball.
Moderator: Speaking of adaptation, playing indoors presents unique challenges compared to outdoor baseball. What advice would you give to the young players relative to adjusting their game for this environment?”
JD: Good point. indoors, the ball tends to travel a bit differently, and the fields are smaller. So, contact hitting becomes even more crucial. These young players need to focus on keeping the ball in play and getting on base consistently.Defensively, they need to be swift and anticipate the ball’s trajectory off the walls and ceilings.
Moderator: Excellent points, Jean-Michel. Lastly, the success of these tournaments goes beyond the athletes on the field. It takes a dedicated team of volunteers and community support to make these events happen.
JD: Absolutely! These tournaments are a community affair, and the support from the municipalities of Louviers and vaudreuil is invaluable. Having access to these excellent facilities and the welcoming
atmosphere these communities create for visiting teams is a huge asset for the Louviers Club.
Moderator: Well said, Jean-Michel. A resounding message about the importance of community and teamwork, both on and off the field.Thank you for sharing your expertise and insights with us today.
