Interview with Coach Antoine Dubois:
Moderator: Antoine, congratulations on the incredible success of your young archers in the recent Saône-et-Loire competitions! The results have been truly exceptional. Could you share the key factors contributing to this strong showing, particularly considering the young age of these athletes?
Coach Dubois: The key isn’t just about the physical training, though that’s crucial. It’s a collective effort: a commitment to high standards from the archers, consistent coaching, and a supportive environment within and outside the club. These kids are passionate, driven, and incredibly receptive to learning. It’s a testament to their dedication, the dedication of their families, and the entire Archère d’Autun team.
Moderator: You’ve touched upon the importance of the supportive environment. Can you elaborate on the specific strategies you employ to foster this environment? Are there specific training methodologies, psychological techniques, or even community initiatives to encourage performance?
Coach Dubois: We focus on a holistic approach, a balance between physical training, mental conditioning, and emotional support. Our training schedule is meticulously crafted to include strength and conditioning to improve posture and control, alongside mental visualization exercises. Equally significant are regular team bonding sessions, encouraging healthy competition within the team, and celebrating every success,no matter how small.
Moderator: Lilou Rey’s impressive performance in the U15 Women’s Classic, followed by victory of Hugo Blankens in the U15 Men’s Classic, demonstrate the depth of talent within the team. What is the secret sauce for identifying and developing such young talents?
coach Dubois: You need both a keen eye, but even more importantly, continuous and accurate assessment. We look at the archers’ potential through a range of metrics, beyond just their scores. Their attentiveness, their adaptability, their ability to learn from mistakes. We tailor training to their individual profiles and provide them opportunities to flourish in their own styles.
Moderator: The results from the Mâcon championship stand out in terms of the consistency. Can you discuss the role of consistency in the young archers’ development, given their early stages of competition?
Coach Dubois: Consistency is the cornerstone of any prosperous athlete, and certainly with these younger competitors. We break down the archery process into smaller, manageable components and then constantly reinforce them. the rigorous program allows for them to acquire the correct approach, body positioning, and muscle memory. Consistency isn’t just about the training but also about staying in tune with the sport, the team’s values, and the mental aspects of the game, building a sustainable path to their future career.
Moderator: Comparing the results across different age categories, like the strong performance from the U23 men’s team or the podium finish for Carty Louis, is there a particular learning curve, a developmental trajectory you’ve observed between these age groups?
Coach Dubois: Each age category possesses a unique dynamic. The U23 group, as an example, is coming into their own and starting to transition from their earlier training to applying that to more competitive arenas. This means that strategic planning is key.At this stage they start to consider how to strategically approach competitions, how to analyze opponents, and how to react to the pressure of the situation.
Moderator: Given this promising start, what are the challenges and opportunities archère d’Autun faces in the future?
Coach Dubois: The biggest challenge is maintaining the high level of motivation and consistency, and ensuring we don’t burnout these young athletes. The opportunities lie in expanding our outreach program to inspire and engage more young people in archery and create pathways for them to thrive both on and off the archery range.
Debating the Importance of Youth Development in Sports:
Moderator: Antoine, your emphasis on the holistic approach—mentality alongside technique—mirrors successful coaching models in many sports.Do you believe this strategy is crucial for long-term success, not only in archery but in other sports as well?
Coach Dubois:Absolutely. you can have all the techniques in the world, but without the mental strength, drive, and resilience, success will often elude someone trying to make a career of the sport. Early development of these skills sets a solid foundation for not just athletic performance, but also essential life skills.
Moderator: how do you see archery’s role in fostering character development in younger athletes?
Coach Dubois: Archery demands focus, discipline, resilience and patience. Failure is as much a part of the lesson as success. Overcoming these adversities builds a remarkable character.
