Sergei, welcome to the show. It’s an honour to have you.
Sergei Zubov: Thank you for having me.
Let’s jump right into it. Kēniņš has had a bit of a rollercoaster ride in his career so far. Now, he’s finding success with HPK.What are your thoughts on this turnaround and the impact of a fresh start for a player?
Sergei Zubov: Well, hockey is a demanding sport, both physically and mentally. Sometimes, a player just needs a new environment, a new challenge, to reignite that spark.A change of scenery can work wonders. It allows a player to escape any pressures or negativity they may have been facing in their previous situation.
And let’s not underestimate the importance of a supportive team environment. You mentioned there are other Latvians on HPK – that sense of familiarity and camaraderie can be invaluable, especially when a player is settling into a new league.
Exactly. It’s early days, but can this success translate to sustained success in his career?
Sergei Zubov: It’s promising, for sure. Early success can be a fantastic confidence booster. It shows that he has the skills to adapt and excel in a new league. But hockey is a marathon, not a sprint. Consistency is key. Can he maintain this level of play over a full season? That will be the true test.
Now, it’s not just Kēniņš who’s shining. his teammate Ravinski is also putting up points. That kind of collective success can be infectious, wouldn’t you say?
sergei Zubov: Absolutely.
Team chemistry is crucial in hockey. If the Latvian contingent can build on this early momentum and establish a tight-knit bond, it will benefit the whole team. Plus, having multiple players push each other to perform at their best
creates healthy competition and can elevate everyone’s game.
We certainly know Kēniņš has the talent.
He’s shown flashes of brilliance throughout his career. Do you see him potentially making a return to top-tier leagues like the NHL?
Sergei Zubov: It’s certainly possible. If he continues to perform well and develops his game further in Finland, he could attract attention from NHL scouts.
But it’s not just about individual talent. It’s about fit, timing, and possibility.
If the right opportunity arises,Kēniņš could definitely make a comeback.
This is a engaging story unfolding in Finland. What would be your advice for Kēniņš as he navigates this new chapter in his career?
Sergei Zubov: Focus on the present, stay humble, and keep working hard.
Enjoy the success, but don’t get complacent.
Continuously strive to improve, learn from his teammates and coaches, and most importantly, remain dedicated to the game he loves.
