Yucatán Hosts inaugural Winter Outdoor Archery Tournament
The vibrant city of Mérida witnessed the launch of the inaugural Winter Outdoor Archery Tournament 2024, a significant sporting event drawing 120 archers from Yucatán, Quintana Roo, and other states across Mexico. Governor joaquín Díaz Mena presided over the opening ceremony, emphasizing the tournament’s role in preparing athletes for the 2025 CONADE National Games.
A Stepping Stone to National and International Competitions
Held at the Inalámbrica Sports Complex, the tournament serves as a crucial platform for archers to assess their competitive standing and gear up for upcoming national and international competitions, as highlighted by Governor Díaz Mena.
“Our aim is to make this tournament a springboard for our athletes, allowing them to gauge their skills and prepare for future challenges,” he stated.
National Archery Stars Take Aim
The tournament boasts an remarkable lineup of nationally recognized archers, including Juan Carlos del Río Gutiérrez, a Yucatán national team member; Sebastián García Flores, representing Coahuila; and Máximo Méndez Ortiz, hailing from Morelos. Adding to the excitement is the presence of carlos Rojas López, a former Olympian from Querétaro.
Fostering a Culture of Sports in Yucatán
Governor Díaz Mena reaffirmed his commitment to promoting sports as a vital tool for community growth. he announced the establishment of six Renacimiento centers across the state, modeled after successful programs in Mexico City. These centers will promote physical activity and provide specialized coaching, further strengthening Yucatán’s sporting landscape.

Rommel Pacheco Marrufo, Director of CONADE, expressed his enthusiasm for hosting international sporting events in Mexico, with a particular focus on Yucatán. He stressed the importance of enhancing sports infrastructure to provide athletes with world-class training and competition facilities.
“Our athletes deserve access to top-notch facilities to hone their skills and compete at the highest level,” he asserted.
“Run for a Cause” Precedes Tournament
Prior to the tournament’s inauguration, Governor Díaz mena participated in the “Run for a Cause” charity race, an initiative to support renowned sports journalist Óscar Rodríguez Hernández, who requires surgery to restore his vision. This heartwarming event underscored the community’s spirit of solidarity and support for its members.

Carlos Rojas López: It’s fantastic to see so many talented young archers here. This tournament is a testament to the growing interest in archery across Mexico, and it’s heartwarming to see Yucatán taking the lead in hosting such a prestigious event.

Carlos Rojas López: Absolutely. Competitions like this provide invaluable experience for archers. it’s not just about winning or losing; it’s about honing your technique, learning to handle pressure, and understanding your strengths and weaknesses. This tournament will undoubtedly serve as a springboard for many of these archers, helping them prepare for higher-level competitions.
Moderator: You’ve seen firsthand the dedication and commitment required to succeed at the international level. what advice would you give to these young archers aspiring to follow in your footsteps?
Carlos Rojas López: Archery, like any sport, requires unwavering dedication and discipline. It demands countless hours of practice, mental fortitude, and a willingness to constantly push your boundaries.
Moderator: Governor Díaz Mena also emphasized the importance of investing in sports infrastructure and promoting a culture of sports in yucatán. He even announced plans for six new “Renacimiento” sports centers across the state. how crucial is this type of investment in nurturing sporting talent?
Carlos Rojas López: It’s crucial! Access to proper facilities, training resources, and qualified coaches is essential for any aspiring athlete. these “renacimiento” centers are a fantastic initiative, providing a much-needed platform for young athletes to develop their skills and reach their full potential.
Moderator: With international sporting events, such as the Olympics, consistently raising the bar for athletic excellence, what steps can Mexico take to ensure its athletes are adequately prepared to compete on the world stage?
Carlos Rojas López: we need to invest more in coach development programs, provide financial support for promising athletes, and create a system that identifies and nurtures talent from a young age.
Moderator: You’ve dedicated your life to archery and represented mexico on the international stage. What would you consider to be your greatest achievement?
Carlos Rojas López: Representing Mexico at the Olympics was undoubtedly a dream come true. But for me, the greatest reward comes from seeing the sport of archery flourish and inspiring young people to take up the bow.

Carlos Rojas López: Confidence and focus. Archery is a highly mental sport. You need to believe in yourself and your abilities, and be able to block out distractions and focus on the target.
