Olympique de marseille is poised for a potential roster shakeup this winter, with several players possibly heading for the exit. The club is reportedly open to offers for those who have seen limited action during the first half of the season, including Lilian Brassier,Ulisses Garcia, adn Bamo Meïté.
Chancel Mbemba’s situation is also under scrutiny.Stade Rennais has expressed interest in a potential €2 million transfer for the 30-year-old defender. While Mbemba’s representatives have been contacted, the player himself seems hesitant about the move. With his contract expiring in June, he is free to negotiate with other clubs starting January 1 for a potential July 1 signing.
President Pablo Longoria addressed the club’s stance on player transfers during a mid-season review on December 18, stating, “The player has a price, and if the price comes, we would be happy to find a solution that is beneficial for the player and the club. Respect for the club is the most crucial thing.”
Brassier Considers Departure
Lilian Brassier is reportedly in discussions with OM regarding a possible departure. A loan with an option to buy is being considered, as the player feels uneasy in Marseille. Club leaders are also questioning his ability to handle the intense pressure associated with playing for OM.
Ulisses Garcia, despite a summer spent in the reserves, has impressed De Zerbi with his performances and resilience. While not a priority for sale, OM remains open to offers for him, as well as amir Murillo.Any departures will be compensated for within the Marseille squad.
Pogba to OM: A Glimmer of Possibility
An “internal meeting” is scheduled to define the objectives for the upcoming transfer window, according to Pablo Longoria. Could paul Pogba be a target? The president’s response was far from definitive.
“At the moment, there is no advanced discussion for various reasons,” Longoria stated. “I respect this world-class player enormously. We have to analyze the situation as he is on the market.” he stopped short of dismissing the possibility entirely, adding, “We must analyze the situation.”
As RMC Sport reported in early December, a move to OM for Paul Pogba is not entirely out of the question. The 31-year-old midfielder, currently serving a doping suspension with Juventus, is expected to be eligible to return to competition in March. Juventus has reportedly negotiated to terminate his contract.
Exclusive Interview: Alexandre Dupont Debates Marseille’s Winter Shakeup – Squad Overhaul or Strategic Refinement?
Host: Welcome back, sports fanatics, to another deep dive into the heart of the beautiful game! Today, we’re joined by Alexandre Dupont, a name synonymous with dedicated Olympique de Marseille fandom. Alexandre, bienvenue! You’ve been a devoted follower of OM for, what, over two decades now?
Alexandre Dupont: (enthusiastically) Merci! It’s a pleasure to be here. Yes, over twenty years. I’ve seen the highs, the lows, the glorious moments, and the moments that made me want to scream at my television. Marseille is in my blood.
Host: And with the winter transfer window looming, there’s plenty to scream about, or perhaps, to celebrate. Recent reports suggest a potential squad overhaul at the Velodrome. We’re talking player departures, potential incomings – perhaps even the whisper of a name like Paul Pogba.Let’s get straight into it, Alexandre: how do you assess the current state of Marseille and the necessity of this reported shakeup?
Alexandre Dupont: Look, the first half of the season has been a rollercoaster. We’ve shown flashes of brilliance, especially in moments of transition and counter-attacking football. But there’s been an inconsistency, a lack of cutting edge in attack, and at times, defensive fragility.I think the club recognises this and that a few changes are needed. We can’t afford to be complacent. We need a squad that’s capable of challenging for titles.
Host: Absolutely. The article highlights potential departures of players like Lilian Brassier, Ulisses Garcia, and others who haven’t seen much playing time. From your fan outlook, are these the right players to move on?
Alexandre Dupont: Regarding Brassier, yes. It sounds like he’s struggling with the pressure of playing for OM. I think we need players who thrive under that intense spotlight. Garcia… that’s a different story. De Zerbi seems to rate him,he is resilient and determined. Maybe a loan is a possibility. Bamo Meïté? I think he has potential to play. I would keep him and give him a chance. This could be a mistake because the team needs to play more as a unit.
Host: captivating perspective, I would like to add that, what about Mbemba? Stade Rennais is showing interest. He’s a key figure, experienced, but at 30, with an expiring contract. How shoudl the club handle this situation? Is the €2 million transfer fee enough?
Alexandre Dupont: Mbemba’s a tough one. He’s been very consistent, a solid presence. Losing him would be a blow to the defence, especially if we don’t have a solid replacement. €2 million is a paltry sum for his quality and experience. If he wants to leave, and if Stade Rennais is serious, and if he doesn’t want to extend, we would need to find the right replacement, but the club should push for more. We shouldn’t sell him on the cheap. We need to show ambition. And I think we’re in a position to do that.
Host: The club’s president, pablo Longoria, has acknowledged the “player has a price” beliefs. That’s pragmatic. it suggests they are open to offers and prioritizing what benefits both the player and the club, especially as it comes to getting the best return on investment.
Alexandre Dupont: Look, Longoria has a reputation of being a shrewd negotiator. He doesn’t shy away from tough decisions. He will always act like he needs to benefit the club, but also be fair to the player. Remember, we saw this with Payet’s exit, and the transfer of Milik to Juventus with little fee.We are in a better moment now, let’s hope that, even as a pragmatic point.
Host: The transfer window isn’t just about departures; it’s also about additions. The buzz, of course, is around Paul Pogba. Longoria was predictably non-committal, but the possibility is there. What are the pros and cons, from a fan’s standpoint, of bringing in pogba, considering his situation with Juventus and the doping suspension?
Alexandre Dupont: This is the tantalizing and controversial question. On paper, Pogba at his best, is a world-class midfielder. He can dictate the tempo, he has unbelievable vision and passing range. He could add important strength to our midfield and make the difference in those tactical battles. The doping suspension, the injuries… these are major red flags. it’s a gamble. A high-risk, high-reward gamble. At the same time, he’s a name that would bring more fans and attention. We’d get better merchandise sales.
Host: You’re touching on the business side. The article mentions juventus’s willingness to possibly terminate Pogba’s contract. That could make him more financially viable, especially for a club like OM. But the risk, as you say, is considerable. He needs to prove he remains the player he was. And OM needs to address it from the squad perspective.
Alexandre Dupont: Exactly. We can’t sacrifice team chemistry for one big name. Our priority should be building a cohesive unit. We are talking about the same club that struggled to manage the exit of Gerson. We need to maintain a good balance in the squad. Let’s imagine that Pogba is a flop because we have the wrong tactical plan, and we are not a unit.
Host: Absolutely.the squad needs the right attitude, the right mix of experience and youth. If you’re looking for a signing in january, who would be your ideal addition, regardless of the rumors surrounding Pogba?
Alexandre Dupont: (pauses, thinking) I think we need more energy in midfield. someone with pace and work rate to partner with Veretout and Kondogbia. A player that can take the ball forward.A right back.We have Murillo, but there isn’t a lot of pace in that side. And a striker. If we have a striker that scores regularly, than we are talking about a different team. The right striker has a weight in the team like a new signing.
Host: Those are crucial needs. The importance of a goal scorer cannot be understated. A player to finish all the passes we provide.
Alexandre Dupont: We need those goals! We need to create chances, but also we need a clinical finisher. Marseille, a goal for us is one of the most critically important thing.
Host: Looking ahead to the rest of the season, what are realistic expectations for Marseille? Can they challenge for a Champions League spot? Can they go deep in European competitions?
Alexandre Dupont: Champions League is the objective, absolutely. We must aim for the top three in the league. We have a decent team. We can compete with the best teams. Reaching European final is the big dream.
Host: fantastic! Alexandre, this has been incredibly insightful as always. Your passion for Olympique de Marseille is infectious. Thank you for gracing us with your expertise!
Alexandre Dupont: My pleasure. Allez l’OM!
