Lewis Hamilton Eyes MotoGP: Could a Red Bull Partnership Be on the Horizon?
Seven-time Formula 1 champion Lewis Hamilton’s interest in entering the MotoGP world as a team owner or co-owner has been circulating for some time. Recent reports suggest that concrete discussions have taken place between Hamilton and KTM’s motorsport chief, Pit Beirer, possibly leading to an unexpected alliance between the racing icon and the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer.
KTM, which fields two teams in MotoGP – the factory Red Bull KTM Factory Racing and the satellite Red Bull GasGas Tech3 – has been facing financial challenges. Despite assurances that these difficulties won’t impact their motorsport involvement, the company’s three billion euro debt has led to insolvency proceedings, prompting a search for investors to secure the future of the MotoGP project.
With significant rule changes looming in 2027, KTM requires substantial funding not only for engine development but also for adapting to the new regulations. Hamilton, who reportedly explored purchasing the Gresini team a few months ago, has emerged as a potential investor.
“We had very interesting discussions with his management,” Beirer revealed in an interview with red Bull’s Speedweek magazine. “It’s no secret that Lewis Hamilton is interested in motogp and considering his own team. We have had concrete discussions with him.”
A partnership between Hamilton and KTM in MotoGP would create a fascinating dynamic, bringing together Hamilton and Red Bull, a major sponsor of the KTM team and a fierce competitor to Monster Energy, Hamilton’s previous sponsor. There are also rumors linking Hamilton to Celsius, another energy drink brand.
Beirer, though, doesn’t see this as a conflict.”Anyone who wants to work with us knows about the connection between Red Bull and KTM. These two brands are inseparable,” he explained. “This hasn’t been an obstacle in our discussions. An investor is different from a sponsor.”
He emphasized the collaborative nature of their relationships with sponsors, stating, “When partners who are willing to invest in such a great project sit at the table, they are invested in it. That should be a positive thing.”
Beirer further highlighted the benefits of having strong partners involved in decision-making, believing it leads to better solutions.
While Hamilton is a prominent contender, he’s not the only one interested in KTM’s MotoGP project. The potential sale of the MotoGP championship to Liberty Media, the company that transformed Formula 1 into a global powerhouse, has increased the project’s attractiveness. Othre potential investors mentioned include Red Bull and Indian motorcycle manufacturer Bajaj Auto.

Hamilton is a global icon, a winner, and his involvement would undoubtedly bring a lot of attention and possibly investment to MotoGP.KTM, on the other hand, has been facing some financial turbulence, so finding a partner like Hamilton could be a lifeline for them.
Moderator: KTM’s financial situation has been a source of concern. Do you think Hamilton’s involvement would be enough to secure their future in MotoGP, especially with the major rule changes coming in 2027?
Kenny Roberts Jr.: It’s a big ask for one man, even someone with Hamilton’s stature and resources. One interesting angle is the relationship between Hamilton and Red Bull. They were rivals in Formula 1, with Hamilton previously sponsored by Monster Energy – a competitor to Red Bull. How do you see this dynamic playing out within a potential partnership?
kenny Roberts Jr.: This is where things get really interesting. Red Bull is inextricably linked with KTM, and Hamilton has a history with their main competitor. There might be some awkwardness initially, but ultimately, I believe everyone involved understands this is about business. If investing in KTM benefits Red Bull’s motorsport ambitions, I’m sure they’ll swallow their pride.
Moderator: It truly seems like a lot of pieces need to fall into place for this partnership to materialize. Are you optimistic about seeing Lewis Hamilton in the MotoGP paddock as a team owner?
Kenny Roberts Jr.: I’m cautiously optimistic. Hamilton is a shrewd businessman, and he wouldn’t commit to anything unless he saw a strong return on investment. Furthermore, KTM needs to provide him with a compelling case. If they can convince him that he can be successful within their framework, I think we might just see this partnership come to fruition.
