The Kurashiki Suimatsu basketball team, emblazoned with the word “Isshin” (meaning “one heart”) on their arms, showcased their unwavering determination in the second round of the SoftBank Winter Cup 2024. Despite a challenging start against Seikajo (Fukuoka ①), the team fought valiantly, ultimately falling 56-83.
This year’s tournament marked a significant milestone for the team,with all 35 players,including those on the bench,contributing to their collective spirit. As Hirokawa ayane, a third-year player and the team’s #10, explained, the inscription “Isshin” symbolizes their commitment to playing as a unified force.
The game against Seikajo began with a flurry of points from the opposing team, leaving Kurashiki Suimatsu trailing 7-28 in the first quarter. coach Rika Shiraishi acknowledged the team’s initial struggles, attributing them to a lack of composure and visible errors. Though, the second half saw a resurgence from Kurashiki Suimatsu, who displayed tenacious defense and a renewed offensive drive.
Despite the final score, the team’s unwavering spirit shone through.As Coach Shiraishi observed, “No one was daunted, and they fought with a desire to do their best until the very end.” This resilience is a testament to the team’s strong bond and their commitment to each other.
Hirokawa, who scored 16 points in the game, exemplifies this spirit. initially considering quitting basketball after junior high, he was drawn to Kurashiki Suimatsu’s positive and supportive surroundings. He describes the team as a close-knit group where everyone encourages and supports each other, nonetheless of grade level.
Coach Shiraishi, a Kurashiki Suimatsu alumna who participated in national tournaments during her high school years, has played a pivotal role in shaping the team’s character. She emphasizes the importance of teamwork and personal growth, both on and off the court.
Looking ahead, Coach Shiraishi is excited about the upcoming Inter-High School tournament, wich will be held in Okayama Prefecture next year. She aims to not onyl achieve positive results but also inspire younger generations by showcasing the team’s dedication and sportsmanship.

Coach Shiraishi: Thank you for having me. it’s a pleasure to be here.
Interviewer: Let’s jump right into it. The Kurashiki Suimatsu team’s journey in the Winter Cup was truly inspiring, even in the face of a tough loss against Seikajo. The team’s motto, “Isshin,” meaning “one heart,” clearly resonated throughout the tournament. What does this motto mean to you personally, and how do you see it manifested within the team?
Coach Shiraishi: “Isshin” is more than just a word scribbled on our arms; it’s the very foundation of our team’s identity. It signifies our unwavering commitment to playing as a single unit, supporting each othre both on and off the court. I see it in the way our players encourage each other, in their willingness to put the team’s needs above their own, and in their unyielding spirit even when faced with adversity.
Interviewer: We saw that fighting spirit in their second-half performance against Seikajo. After falling behind in the first quarter, they really turned things around. What was your halftime message to the team, and how did you motivate them to keep pushing despite the deficit?
Coach Shiraishi: I reminded them that basketball is a game of momentum shifts. We needed to focus on our strengths – our tenacious defence and our ability to create scoring opportunities through teamwork. I also emphasized the importance of believing in themselves and their “Isshin” – playing with that unified heart and refusing to give up.
Interviewer: It’s clear that building a strong sense of camaraderie and team unity is a priority for you. Can you elaborate on the importance you place on team bonding and how you foster that habitat within the team?
Coach Shiraishi: Absolutely.
I believe a strong team bond is the backbone of any successful sports team. We organize regular team-building activities, encourage open interaction, and create a supportive environment were every player feels valued and respected.It’s about building trust and fostering relationships that extend beyond the court.
Interviewer: It’s inspiring to see the impact you’ve had on the players, like Hirokawa who was considering quitting basketball before joining Kurashiki Suimatsu. what advice would you give to young athletes who are facing challenges or questioning their commitment to their sport?
Coach Shiraishi: My advice would be to remember why you fell in love with your sport in the first place. Sometimes doubts and frustrations are unavoidable, but don’t let them extinguish your passion. Seek support from coaches, mentors, or teammates, and remember that perseverance and dedication are key to unlocking your potential.
Interviewer: Looking forward, you have the Inter-High School tournament on your radar next year. What are your aspirations for the team, both in terms of results and the valuable lessons you hope they learn along the way?
Coach Shiraishi: Our goal is, of course, to achieve positive results, but equally crucial for me is to see our players grow as individuals and as a team. I hope they learn the value of teamwork, resilience, and sportsmanship, and that they carry these lessons with them throughout their lives, both on and off the court.
