”Time Flies But The Game Lives On”: Talking NBA Christmas Day with Sue Bird
This Christmas saw the NBA deliver a packed slate of games, filled with thrilling matchups, phenomenal individual performances, and, regrettably, some injury concerns. Joining me today to break it all down is WNBA legend and veteran basketball analyst Sue Bird. Welcome, Sue!
Sue Bird: Thanks for having me! Always excited to talk hoops, especially during such an exciting time of the year.
Me: Let’s start with the Lakers-Warriors game. What a battle! LeBron continuing to defy age, curry dropping 38, and the drama at the buzzer with Reaves’ clutch shot. What were your main takeaways from that one?
Sue Bird: It was vintage NBA Christmas! The intensity, the star power, the back-and-forth action – it had it all. LeBron showing he’s still got that magic touch, even after 19 Christmas games, is something special. And Curry, despite the loss, reminded everyone why he’s one of the greatest shooters we’ve ever seen. That game was a reminder that these guys are at the pinnacle of their sport, putting on a show for the world to see.
Me: I want to touch on Curry hinting at retirement post-game. Do you think this might be the beginning of the end for the “Chef”?
Sue Bird: I think it’s natural for a player of his caliber to start thinking about the future, especially with the mileage he’s put on his body. Though, I wouldn’t read too much into those comments just yet. Steph loves the game and still performs at an elite level. When the time comes, he’ll announce it – until then, we get to enjoy watching him do his thing.
Me:
Moving on to the Knicks and Spurs. What do you think of Wembanyama’s performance? The hype surrounding him is undeniable, but can he live up to it?
Sue Bird: Wembanyama is a generational talent, plain and simple. He’s got size, skill, and a basketball IQ that’s remarkable for someone so young. Sure, ther’ll be growing pains – the NBA is a different beast entirely – but the potential is there for greatness. The Spurs seem to have crafted a solid young core, and I’m excited to see how wembanyama leads them forward.
Me: Sadly,we also saw Luka Doncic go down with a calf strain. That can’t be good news for the Mavericks.
Sue Bird: Injury is always a part of the game, unfortunately. Doncic is crucial to the Mavericks’ success. Hopefully, it’s not a serious injury, and he can return to the court soon.
They need him healthy to make a playoff push in the competitive Western Conference.
Me: As we wrap up, any closing thoughts on the NBA’s Christmas Day slate?
Sue Bird: It was a fantastic showcase of the league’s present and future. We saw veteran stars still shining brightly and young talents emerging as forces to be reckoned with. The NBA continues to entertain and excite fans worldwide, and I for one, can’t wait to see what unfolds in the coming year.
Me: Wise words indeed, Sue. Thanks so much for joining me today!
Sue Bird: Absolutely! My pleasure.
