Yuhang District Unveils new “Pocket Park” Blending Fitness, Culture, and Leisure

Hangzhou’s Yuhang District has transformed idle urban land into a vibrant “pocket park,” offering residents a unique space for fitness, culture, and leisure. The newly completed Hangxing Road Node Park (Phase II) is set to open soon, marking another milestone in the city’s urban micro-renewal efforts.

A Green Oasis in the Urban Landscape

Located on the west side of Hanghang Road, between Yuanyun Road and Jinchang Road, the park spans approximately 10,978 square meters. The project, implemented in two phases, features a 311.6-square-meter multi-functional sports and cultural building, 2,774.4 square meters of underground parking, an elevated fitness running track, and a basketball court.

Designed as a “pocket park,” the space maximizes functionality and greenery in a compact area. By integrating plants and facilities tailored to the local environment, the park addresses the growing demand for green spaces in high-density urban areas.

A multi-Functional Hub for the community

the park’s design seamlessly blends fitness, culture, and leisure into its landscape. A 3.5-meter-wide permeable asphalt running track winds through the park, catering to joggers and walkers. The “pocket park + sports” model also emphasizes shared fitness spaces, with a basketball court serving as a focal point for community engagement. The park’s greenery is equally impressive. Beech trees with brown-red leaves line the streets, while soapberry trees with bright yellow foliage form the backbone of the main park road. Tallow trees, known for their lush leaves, add character to key landscape nodes, creating a visually striking contrast between urban roads and park green spaces.

A Model for Urban Renewal

The Hangxing Road Node Park exemplifies how cities can repurpose underutilized land to enhance residents’ quality of life. By prioritizing flexibility and specialized functions, the park serves as a blueprint for future urban micro-renewal projects.

As Yuhang District continues to innovate, this new “pocket park” stands as a testament to the power of thoughtful urban planning. It’s not just a park—it’s a community hub where fitness, culture, and leisure come together in perfect harmony.
