Priest Intercepts Attempted Theft of Consecrated Host During Mass in Honduras
A Catholic priest in Honduras recently thwarted an attempt to steal a consecrated Host during a Mass, highlighting the deep reverence for the Eucharist within the Catholic faith. The incident occurred during the second-anniversary Mass for the Saint Lucia shrine in the Diocese of Santa Rosa de Copán.
Father Nery Adalberto Gómez Pérez, a visiting priest from St. Mark the Evangelist parish in Ocotepeque, was celebrating the Mass on December 13th, the feast day of Saint Lucy, when the incident unfolded before a large congregation.
Eyewitness accounts and video footage show a man, described as taller than average, wearing a white T-shirt and baseball cap, approaching father Gómez during Communion. The man’s actions instantly raised suspicion.
According to reports, the man did not respond when Father Gómez said, the body of Christ.
Instead, he made an unusual movement, reaching forward to grab the Host from the priest’s hand rather than allowing it to be placed on his tongue, a standard practise during Catholic Communion.
Video footage, available on Channel 16 Ocotepeque’s Facebook page, captures the moment (beginning at 1:06:11) when the man, with the Host partially visible in his mouth, appears momentarily disoriented and glances nervously at the priest.
Instead of consuming the Host, the man turned to return to his pew. Father Gómez, realizing the man’s intent, immediately stopped distributing Communion and followed him, demanding the return of the consecrated Host.
After retrieving the Host, Father Gómez reserved it and resumed the Mass without further disruption.
Eucharist: The Church’s ‘Greatest Treasure’
Following the Mass, Father Gómez addressed the congregation, emphasizing the meaning of the Eucharist and the responsibility of all Catholics to protect it from desecration. He reminded the faithful that the Eucharist is the greatest treasure of the Church,
and that all members of the church – clergy, religious, and laity – must be vigilant in safeguarding it.
Father Gómez urged parishioners to remain attentive during Communion, stating, something that we all must do, if the Eucharist is our treasure, is to be vigilant that no one does something wrong.
He stressed that protecting the eucharist is not solely the priest’s responsibility but a shared duty among all Catholics.
He further explained that any Christian has the right and responsibility to challenge someone attempting to desecrate the Eucharist, saying they have the authority as a Christian
to demand: Give me the consecrated Host, please. Give it to me. As if you are not going to honor it, give it to me, and I will honor it,
before returning it to a priest.
Father Gómez concluded by reiterating the Catholic belief that the Eucharist is the presence of God among us, real and alive. If not, this is a theater.
This incident in Honduras serves as a stark reminder of the importance of religious symbols and the lengths to which some will go to either protect or desecrate them. It also highlights the vigilance required to safeguard deeply held beliefs and traditions. The actions of Father Gómez underscore the commitment of religious leaders to preserving the sanctity of their faith.
The attempted theft raises questions about the motivations behind such acts and the potential for similar incidents in other religious settings. Further inquiry into the man’s background and intentions could shed light on the broader context of this event.
