The arrival of Gustavo Quinteros at Grêmio has ignited a wave of excitement amongst the Tricolor faithful. With a glistening trophy cabinet boasting titles won in Ecuador and Mexico, Quinteros brings a wealth of experience and a burning ambition to return Grêmio to the summit of Brazilian football. To delve deeper into the implications of this appointment, we sat down with Grêmio legend and former striker, Alexandre “Preguiça” Oliveira, to discuss quinteros’s goals, the club’s aspirations, and the challenges that lie ahead.
Moderator: preguiça, welcome. the appointment of Quinteros has generated a lot of buzz. What are your initial impressions?
Preguiça: Its certainly an interesting appointment. Quinteros has a proven track record, especially in south America. His recent success with Emelec in Ecuador, winning the Serie A, shows he knows how to build a winning team. Grêmio needs that kind of leadership right now.
Moderator: Quinteros has spoken about wanting to win everything: the Gauchão, Brasileirão, Copa do Brasil, and copa Sul-Americana. Is that a realistic goal for Grêmio in 2025?
Preguiça: that’s enterprising, for sure. Winning four major titles in a single season is incredibly tough, even for the biggest clubs. But you have to admire Quinteros’s hunger. The key is priorities. Gauchão is historically critically important for Grêmio, and starting strong there will build momentum. Brazil is fiercely competitive, so focusing on the Brasileirão should be paramount.
Moderator: You mentioned Grêmio needing leadership. What challenges do you think Quinteros will face in rebuilding the squad?
Preguiça: Firstly, the squad needs a serious injection of quality. Grêmio hasn’t been consistently challenging for titles lately, and some key players have moved on. Quinteros needs to identify specific areas that need improvement and bring in players who fit his system.
Moderator: He’s brought in a familiar coaching team, too – desábato, Quezada, Rodrigo Quinteros, and Roldán, and they’re looking to add a new goalkeeping coach. What do you make of this approach?
Preguiça: It shows a commitment to a clear vision.Having a trusted team around him means Quinteros can hit the ground running. Building that strong unit will be vital, especially in a high-pressure habitat like Grêmio.
Moderator: Preguiça, you played for Grêmio during a golden era. What advice would you give Quinteros as he embarks on this new chapter?
Preguiça: Two things.First, connect with the fans. Grêmio fans are passionate and demanding. If Quinteros can show them he understands the club’s history and values, they’ll get behind him unconditionally. Second, build a team that plays attractive, attacking football. Grêmio fans love to see their team playing with flair and aggression.
Moderator: thank you for your insights, Preguiça.
Preguiça: It’s a pleasure. Porto Alegre is waiting with baited breath. Let’s hope Quinteros can deliver!
