Joan-Benjamin: honestly, the pressure was immense. We were down in the team finals,and a loss meant the entire team’s dreams were dashed. But while I respected Abe’s achievements,being a double Olympic and quadruple world champion myself, I knew I couldn’t focus on his reputation.
I had to believe in myself and my abilities. Abe’s selection, while unexpected, actually fuelled my determination. It felt like a challenge, a test of my skills. I was ready to prove myself.
Moderator: Many would say the Japanese team’s strategy backfired.Did you expect to face Hashimoto instead?
Joan-Benjamin:
I did anticipate facing Hashimoto. I’d defeated him twice before, and I was familiar with his style. Abe’s presence, though, brought a different dynamic to the fight. It forced me to adapt and think strategically on the fly.
Moderator: what do you believe was the key factor that secured you the win in that crucial match?
Joan-Benjamin: Honestly, I think it was a combination of factors. My physical planning was rigorous, but equally crucial was the mental fortitude I’d cultivated over my career. Belief in myself and the trust in my training played a huge role.

The paris Grand Slam is truly a special event, especially after the Olympics. It’s a chance for me to further showcase my skills and continue my journey in judo. My aim is always to perform at my best, win, and inspire young Judokas worldwide.
