Montreal’s NBA Stars Collide on Boxing day
Basketball fans in Quebec are in for a treat this Boxing Day as two of Montreal’s finest, Luguentz Dort and Bennedict Mathurin, face off in an exciting NBA matchup. Dort’s oklahoma City Thunder will travel to Indiana to take on Mathurin and the Pacers, promising a thrilling showdown between two rising stars.
Dort, a seasoned veteran in his sixth NBA season, will be looking to extend the Thunder’s remarkable eight-game winning streak. Simultaneously occurring, Mathurin, in his third year, aims to build on the Pacers’ recent momentum, having secured five consecutive victories.
This will be the third encounter between the two Montreal natives, with each team claiming a win in their previous meetings. The stakes are high as both teams look to solidify their positions in their respective conferences.
Mathurin has been on fire lately, setting a career-high 38 points against the New york Knicks on November 10th, showcasing his impressive shooting prowess by going 7 for 9 from beyond the arc.
Dort has also been making waves, sinking at least four three-pointers in three games as December 7th, demonstrating his own offensive firepower.
Adding to the excitement, both teams boast other standout players. The Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is currently the NBA’s third-leading scorer and a defensive force, ranking second in steals per game. The Pacers counter with Tyrese Haliburton, who sits fifth in the league in assists, and Myles Turner, a dominant presence in the paint, ranking fourth in blocks.
The Thunder’s stifling defense has been a key factor in their success this season. They lead the league in fewest points allowed per game, steals per game, and free throw percentage, showcasing their commitment to both ends of the court.
Following this highly anticipated matchup, the Pacers will face a tough challenge as they conclude 2023 with back-to-back games against the Boston Celtics, the reigning NBA champions who swept Indiana in the Eastern Conference Finals last May.

Welcome back to Sports Buzz, everyone! And what a treat we have for you today! Joining us is none other than baseball legend and world Series champion, Kirk Gibson. But today, Gibson trades his bat for a microphone as we delve into the exciting world of basketball and preview the much-anticipated Boxing Day matchup between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers.
Kirk,thanks for joining us!
kirk Gibson: It’s great to be here! This Northeastern snowbird is burning for some hoops action! Always exciting to see young Canadian talent shining on the big stage.
Absolutely! We’re looking at a clash of two exciting Montreal natives, Lu Dort and Bennedict Mathurin. Both teams have been playing great ball lately; Thunder riding an eight-game winning streak, the Pacers on a five-game win streak. What stands out to you about this matchup?
gibson: You know, I always loved a good fight, and this game screams rivalry in the making. Both these guys are hungry. Dort, the veteran, wants to prove he can lead this Thunder squad deep into the playoffs. And Mathurin, man, that kid’s got fire! 38 points against the Knicks – that’s putting the league on notice.
He certainly seems to be establishing himself as a force to be reckoned with.
gibson: No doubt. And
let’s not forget about those supporting casts. Gilgeous-Alexander, a silent assassin, can score with the best of them. And Haliburton, setting up his teammates like a magician, keeps the Pacers offense humming.
The Thunder’s defense has been their calling card this season, leading the league in several key categories. Will they be able to lock down Mathurin and the Pacers offense?
Gibson: I wouldn’t underestimate the Pacers. They’ve got firepower, and Turner can protect the rim like nobody’s business. But the Thunder play with an edge that reminds me of some of those gritty teams I played against. I think this game comes down to who wants it more.
It’s a big Christmas game, both teams are playing well, the stakes are high. It’s definitely shaping up to be a nail-biter.
Any predictions, Kirk?
Gibson: I’ll tell you what – I wouldn’t bet against Oklahoma City right now. That eight-game winning streak speaks for itself. but Mathurin plays like a man possessed right now. Could see this going down to the wire, maybe even overtime!
That
would
be
astonishing! What would your advice be to young basketball fans tuning in on Boxing Day, especially those aspiring to be like Dort or Mathurin?
Gibson: Never give up on your dreams. Work hard, stay disciplined, and never let anyone tell you that you can’t achieve somthing. Most importantly, have fun out there! That’s what it’s all about.
Great advice, Kirk!
