Athletico-PR’s Série B Ambitions: A Conversation with Former Brazil International, Zé Roberto
Athletico-PR’s recent relegation to Série B sent shockwaves through Brazilian football. but the Curitiba-based club seems steadfast to bounce back swiftly, bolstering their squad with the additions of experienced midfielders Luiz Fernando and Raul. We sat down with former Brazil international and midfield maestro, Zé Roberto, to discuss if these signings are enough to propel Athletico back to the Brazilian top flight.
Interviewer: Zé Roberto, thanks for joining us. Athletico-PR’s decision to sign Luiz Fernando and raul has certainly generated buzz. What are your initial thoughts on these acquisitions?
Zé Roberto: It’s a smart move from Athletico. Losing their Série A status was a blow, but these signings show ambition. Luiz Fernando’s goal-scoring record speaks volumes, while Raul’s familiarity with coach Barbieri is a valuable asset.
Interviewer: Luiz Fernando’s 21 goals in 53 appearances for Atlético-GO in 2024 are impressive. Do you think he can replicate that form in Série B, which often presents a different kind of challenge?
Zé Roberto: ( pausing thoughtfully) Série B is fiercely competitive. But Luiz Fernando is a proven talent. He’s adaptable and possesses the technical skillset needed to thrive in a more physically demanding environment.
Interviewer: Raul’s return to work with Barbieri seems important. How critically important is that existing relationship in a new team dynamic?
Zé roberto: It’s vital. Football is about more than just individual talent. A strong relationship between players and the coach creates a positive atmosphere, fosters understanding, and can translate into better performances on the pitch.
Interviewer: Athletico PR faces a challenging campaign, competing in Campeonato Paranaense, Copa do Brasil, and Série B. Do you believe they have the squad depth to handle this multi-front assault?
Zé Roberto: It’s a demanding schedule, no doubt. Athletico will need to be shrewd in managing their resources, using squad rotation effectively. However, if Luiz Fernando and Raul can hit the ground running, and the existing players step up, I believe they have the potential to compete well on all fronts.
Interviewer: Looking ahead to the first game against Paraná Clube on January 11th, what are your expectations for Athletico’s performance?
Zé roberto: A strong start is crucial. Paraná Clube will be eager to test Athletico, but I expect a determined performance from the home side. They need to set a statement of intent from day one, showing they’re serious about regaining their Série A status.
Interviewer: Zé Roberto, thank you for sharing your insights.
